new years day - cahore.

#1 Post by spindlefist »

Ppl: Me and Eefs(she was in the car)

time: 2 thirty - 6pm

tide- low enough, rising..

weather- headin to -10!!! :o

rigs: pulley/ 3 hook flapper

bait: Mussel, lug, squid

result: 6 coalfish

report:

We decided to spend new years down in Wexford, so headed off down on new years eve. I'd been to Southside, and had picked up a new rod holdall and the Igloo shelter :P The lads there gave me the secret to gettin mussels outta their shells without mashin em with a boga grip, so thanks to them for that...
Anyhow, new years day greated us with frozen roads!! but I was determined to get my first fish of 2010, so we decided to head to Cahore, as we could fish from car.. the 20 min journey turned into an hour and 15 mins, drivin at 10kph!!! got there, lads on the pier had nothing all day, so set up on the beach just off to the left of the pier. As I had cast out, I was rootin thru the stuff thrown up by the storms, starfish everywhere, as well as velvet swimming crabs, what can only be specien tompot blennies, 8 to 9 inchs long,... octopus, and so many ray egg cases. the ray cases outnumbered the dogfish cases 5 to 1 which was interesting for the summer hunting... anyhow, I came across a half open case, as the seagulls had been feasting before we got there, I picked it up and out fell the smallest ray i've ever seen... He was an embryo, too small to survive, still had his yolk, but I put him in the surf nonetheless, poor little chap.
Back to the fishing, the pulley with lovely big cocktails of squid, mussel and lug were remaingin untouched. The flapper in close started jumping after darkness with coalfish, missed twice as many as I landed, as I was leavin them bite, in hope one would hook and attract a big aul cod. No such luck... we live in hope.....

careful on those roads, and tight lines..
