Re: Ferrypoint Youghal. 31/12/09
Hi Junior Conger
I fished Ferrypoint yesterday afternoon from 2pm to 6pm catching 12 Codling in total mainly using frozen black lug and cooked peeled prawns for bait. The codling were small with 1.5lb being my biggest.
The wind was biting, very cold indeed. I was surprised that I have fished Ferrypoint twice this week and have yet to see any Whiting? Where have they all gone?

Re: Ferrypoint Youghal. 31/12/09
Well done - good to see that a few codling bigger than half a pound beginning to show up.
Whiting seem very scarce this winter - last winter they were everywhere, ripping the bait to bits. But then cod were very rare last winter. I guess it is a cyclical thing.
Another thing I have noticed is that coalfish are much more common this year compared to last year, but they are a lot smaller. Two years ago coalfish were also very abundant but much bigger - generally 30-40 cm, with very few less than 30 cm. This winter I have got a bunch of tiny ones, seldom bigger than 20 cm

Re: Ferrypoint Youghal. 31/12/09
Strangely fished Ferry point yesterday afternoon. It was very busy and I couldnt get onto the point 9tide was coming in / on the top) and had to fish towards the open sea. Anyway, it was very slow, no codling showed for me although the guys next to me appeared to catch one, but I caught a Whiting and two coalfish.
All were very small.
Rockhopper, I agree with your observations. A couple of years ago we were dragging in big Coalies and a big cod. Last year I could only find Pin Whiting and due to the weather over Xmas 2008 they were all up the Blackwater at Templemichael. This year it's small codling by Youghal.....
Last few days I have also tried Ballyquin and Ardmore, without a single knock. Whilst teh codling are small they are at least there and providing sport!
