galway estuary 28/12/09

#1 Post by chrisfeeney30 »

People:myself and a few others

Duration:1.5 hours

Tide:low

Weather:east wind, freeeeeezing cold

Bait:mack, squid, sandeel

Rigs:various

Results:myself: 1 coalie

Report:we had intended to fish off mutton island but after a 2 km walk we reached the lighthouse, We discovered we had two options to go left onto an ice sheet, or, right , onto the roughest ground you could imagine. We took the rough ground option, we walked for for 5 minutes and realised it would take about 30 minutes to get to a place we didnt know much about. We decided to cancel this trip and headed to a nearby estuary which none of us had ever fished before. After another 1.5km walk we reached the estuary. various baits went out in differant distances, not much was happening until i pulled out a small coalie. We packed up after a few casts looking forward to our big walk home! Used my new hsm tonight, fantastic rod..

hi chris,im hoping to get out fishing on the bay in january.i bought a 17ft dory boat.i havent been sea fishing much,i was out last year with john brittan from cleggan on his boat.we has a great days fishing loads of pollack and few other species.i was hoping you might be able to give me a few spots to try from the boat,i can launch it from oranmore or the new slip at the docks.we used baited feathers with john to great success and few jellys.is that the best approach again to get started and roughly what depth of water will i try.ive a fishfinder in the boat.what is the big drop off behind mutton like.any info would be great thanks

heard ye were going to fish mutton, not the best place tto fish when the weather is like this though..

Hi smiliejp, there are quite a few marks which are rather local (inner bay) that would be good to try out, i've been told of a few marks and i know a few lads who would also be willing to head out and try for a few marks

yeah, its definitely a deep water mark, and is a good spot to fish, getting there without being noticed is the key..
