Wild Brown Trout for sale!?

#1 Post by adam.urwin »

Hi lads, was wondering if anyone knows if its legal to sell wild brown trout? Its on sale in a fish shop on the way to Rathmines. Also is it legal to sell smoothies? Have seen them on the fish stall on Moore St.

If their Irish sourced fish then it's the closed season so it's also illegal to fish for them afaik.

If they are indeed wild brownies it is definitely illegal to sell them or to be in possession of them. Report it to the Central Fisheries Board. www.cfb.ie

Afraid not. Sale of wild brown trout is not illegal in Ireland. You can legally catch and sell wild brown trout as long as you adhere to whatever catch limits, size limits, etc are in place where you catch them. There is still a commercial fishery for brown trout licensed on Lough Ree or Derg (not sure which), although not sure if they have fished in the last few years.
If the fish were caught out of season, or caught illegally, then yes, it is illegal to sell them or be in possession.
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

Well, reported to Eastern Region Fisheries - Pat Doherty is sending someone round tomorrow. It is legal to sell the farmed trout from a fishery in Shannon region but if its wild then its not. Will post when I hear the results.

Absolutely, and should be investigated. However, there is a commercial fishery for wild brown trout on the Shannon, and the sale of wild trout is not prohibited. If fish were caught in season and frozen they could still be sold out of season.

My guess is they are farmed trout and the fish shop is advertising them as wild to get a premium price from customers.
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

Just got this reply - away in Uk for Xmas and have only just checked emails.

Adam

Thanks very much for your report last Friday, apologies for the delay in responding to you. We have checked this out and traced the fish back to the supplier and found the correct documentation showing that these fish were originally imported. They are therefore legal.

Thanks again for bringing this matter to our attention, with the current staff shortages we need all the eyes and ears we can get!

Wishing you a Happy Christmas and tight lines in 2010.

Regards
Pat Doherty

I think Kev means about the 'wild' brown trout. To be honest I'm with Dennis on this, don't really see a need to name and shame.

Sound point Denis. Naming and shaming might not do much here, but I still think it's bad form. We need Market Stalls, fishmongers, butchers and such to know that us anglers are watching and will report any issues we see out there. I suppose the venue in question now knows this and will hopefully refrain from false advertising in future.

The CFB stated that the brown trout was imported, not that it was not wild.
