peeler crab

Just wondering how much peeler crab cost around the country, The only ones i can get here cost 2.25 euro each !
I wouldnt usually bother but the codling im getting seem to have a mouthfull of crab, i recon i would get more with the crab. Hardbacks probably wouldnt do much good. Anyone know if there is any cheaper way to get them?

2.25 try 1 euro over here, sometimes 1.50 if their thin on the grounds. 2.25 is a complete and utter rip off

is there anywhere you could set your own traps?, bit late in the year now for getting a few unless you can scuba dive or live in cork. but for the following year it would be worth a shot. look for muddy areas where you know crab life exists. could either use tyres, 1 foot pieces gutter half pipe placed into the mud at a 45 degree angle or cavity blocks. could be onto a winner. according to kieran hanrahan you can collect them in kilary

sure in a place where fresh lug and rag for sale is non-existent, and good quality frozen mack, sandeel and squid are hard enough to find its a miracle we can get frozen crab at all.

Cant wait for that fella to get the mail order bait service up and running

never found a single peeler around galway, there are a couple of spots outside the city but we don,t have transport to get there.

glad i didnt buy em now! Its very bad at the moment, without fish shops for mack and squid you wouldnt really be able to get bait! Useless around here!!

Cheers, its very expensive alright, as alex said there extreamly hard to find around here, iv never found one either! I might however give the tyre thing a go, have a place in mind, probably wouldnt be any good but might be worth a shot!

Is there any asian markets in Galway? They are usually great for gettin fish baits in, there is Gannets and the likes out by the roundabouts there, ya ever use them?

It is the same up here in the north. They are normaly around £4.50 to £5 (sterling) for packs of 4. What a rip off. Definately worth learing where and how to get your own. They are also blast frozen so you have no guarantee if they were peerers at the time they were frozen.....

yep the asian shop on market street 10 clamaris for 2.50

the african shop does large frozen macks for €1

aswell as the usual suspects down at galway bay seafoods

if you persevere there are peelers - but fishing in the bay and in connemara - the crab has never suddenly turned on the fish for me

about the only thing it does turn on the feed was the wrasse and you can use harbacks for that craic

personally i would just stock up if on the east coast or get them from that mail order service if and when it gets going and ill think youll find theyre prob not worth the hassel in the end

Up here they can be got in season, mainly summer months, but no where near the number they seem available on east or south coast.
Generally i stock up on them when they are readily available on the east + south coast, and we really dont need many of them up here during the year as other baits seem to work better for the majority of species.
I remember collecting some years ago at some place over on Achill in August...probably not much help to you!

in cork their €1 each in one shop. €1.20 each in another and anything from €1.50-€2.00 in another theiving gits place.

Bhoy32 on this site is selling them, €10 for 12 and apparently very good quality. head to youghal for a days fishing and buy a big bag from him and freeze them?

Bhoy32 has excellent crab and I highly recommend them!
12 for 10 euro is hard to beat!

youl only get one crab maybe 2 the odd time from the gutter pipe, its better in some ways because its hard to see when placed correctly and weed starts growing around it. the tyres are a millions times better numbers wise but tend to pillaged by crafty anglers burry it in at a 45 degree angle so your left with a tunnel effect going down into the mud. it goes in vertically .
