Wicklow Harbour 12-12-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:4-30pm-9pm

Tide:rising

Weather:nice enough for December, slight southeast breezes

Bait:lug and bluey

Rigs:2 + 3 hook flappers

Results:1 x rockling , 7 x codling

Report:Hadnt been well for a few days so opted for some easy fishing in Wicklow Harbour.Only one other angler there, a polish guy i think, and he told me he hadnt had a bite yet and he was there for the last 2 hours  . I got set up anyways with 2 rods, one out at about 60 yds and the other in close. Later on i set up another rod for congers but this wasnt touched all evening. After a while i got a bite on the rod in close , and reeled in a 5 bearded rockling, blank saved and i was delighted to land a codling , approx 25cms on the other rod  . Then i got a double of codling ,didnt really see the bites, i think they went for the bait as i reeled in. The snag Fairy had followed me here and i lost a rig which i was convinced there was something decent on, but who knows :? :?: :?: .I had another codling by the time Fishface dropped down for a minute to give me a spool of shockleader, thanks Neil  ,at the rate i'm losing rigs i'll need it   . The polish guy came over to have a chat and i showed him that his mack baits were too big, which was the reason he was getting bites but not hooking any fish :| .My advice was too late for him as he was out of bait and packed up. When he left I felt very lonely there   and almost missed those balmy summer evenings with travellers training their greyhounds under everyones rods and the smell of urine and cider in the air,,,,,,,,,,,,well almost   .I moved down the corner to the "hotspot" ,,,which was more in the breeze now and was freezing but all i got were crabs stealing the bait. I had an hour without a nibble and was starting to pack up when i got a codling, followed by another, which kept me there for another half hour before i finally headed home for Match of the Day and bed.Cold and breezy, 8 fish, biggest 25cms   ,,,long periods without a bite and not a sight of Brendan Gleeson  but thats fishing in Wicklow Harbour in December.
P.s. picked up bluey by mistake instead of mackeral,,,,,,very soft needs to be whipped on. The codling did go for it though, while the lug was left untouched. Would have liked to have some mackeral though to compare it with. I also got a new headlight, a led lenser h7. My silva l1 just stopped working  . Have to say the led lenser is much brighter and you can widen or narrow the beam as you wish, very handy, also has a dimmer switch at the battery pack to save power. I was very impressed with it on its first outing, only hope it lasts .40 euro, half the price of the silva
