Winter Lure Fishing

#1 Post by Pat »

It ain't over till its over :D . I was slow to mothball the auld lure rod & reel for the winter. I was hoping for just one last chance. Well we got it today. Myself and Marlinman couldn't resist trying a plugging session & headed for W. Waterford where recent reports were encouraging. We were rewarded. 10 fish between us with this beauty of 7.5lbs the best of the bunch :D .

Hey Pat, thank you for your post. I'm heading out on my venue soon with my spinning rod, so your report and photo are highly encouraging! :D

Hey Pat that's really encouraging. I haven't been able to fish for the last 2 months because of my broken Sakura  I' m getting a new rod very soon and thought it was just going to be too late - but maybe not

Nice fish btw

A Big thanks pat I have been so discouraged with winter fishing so far this gave me the boost I needed. :D :D
Not lure fishing in particular just fishing in general and weather has been so depressing.

I'd have to say I think we were lucky. A case of hitting the right place, at the right time, and under the right conditions. I've lure fished in December numerous times over the last few years and blanked. I reckon its at least five years since I caught a fish on the lure at this time of year. Having said that I'm keeping the fingers crossed that the luck stays with us  .

Well done Pat, Mike,
I will have to dust off the spinning rod now and have a crack at lure fishing over the weekend.

Or is it the improved quality of the lures? - like we were discussing the the last time I met you about the bass catches dramatically improving when we started using the lures from Patrick Gallagher.
What lures did you get them on?
Cod season Winter 2013/14: 117 cod (best fish: 6.5 lbs)
Cod season Winter 2014/15: 193 cod (best fish: 4.25 lbs)

Bass Totals:
2007: 1
2008: 37
2009: 120
2010: 44
2011: 151
2012: 79
2013: 20
2014: 19
2015: 11
2016: 3

Me thinks it is often the right place at the right time. Kilty lures which are very cheap work brilliantly from rocks in W Waterford. I have used the best of plugs ( Feed Shallow & Marie Chase) but they do not seem to catch any more fish.

In certain other areas plugs do work better.

Pat's right, right place right conditions and alot of luck :D .I'd say this cold snap has scuppered things a bit but you'd never know, love getting out this time of year as its possible to strike it very lucky but time is against us or should i say water temps, there's a certain temp that triggers things off or in this case stops it  .Its just my opinion but never really felt bass move far away during the colder months if at all,the real big girls stay close once theres a good food source around how else do they survive to grow big and strong and pats fish proves that me thinks 8) .
There are some crazy guys out there who lure fish all year round despite the cold, know of one chap who had a 13lb fish on a toby one xmas eve a few years back before global warming and the like with snow falling around him.
Wonder has anyone contemplated lure fishing for cod during the winter months like other parts of the world, now that would be super cool 8) 8)

Agreed, Stan. When I lived in Old Parish, one of the locals there had a lash the few days before Christmas every year and always caught a decent fish for the festive table. He always used Kilties.
