galway 13/12/09

#1 Post by chrisfeeney30 »

People:me, kaylemf

Duration:4.5 hours

Tide:rising, dropping

Weather:flat calm, mild, beautiful

Bait:maddies, mack squid

Rigs:portsmoth and flappers

Results:me:sea trout, turbot
kaylem: :x :(

Report: Couldnt get out last night so had to make it right today, absolutly beautiful weather, t shirt stuff in midday! Fishing was really poor with no fish for the first 3 hours. Then i got a tiny turbot but it saved a blank when things were looking bad and a new species for the year so was happy with that. Decided to dig some maddies, got nothing on them though. There was no surf coming in and the water was flat calm. Untill the last cast when small waves started to roll in. I cast out a massive 3 hook flapper with various baits and a watch let and twitched it in every few mintues, Left it where i could see some small waves breaking, was setting down my other rod and glanced at my rod with the flapper and it slammed over and started taking line quickly, i lifted into the fish, the rod was bent like iv never seen it, and the fish was jumping out of the water and going from left to right, After a few minutes i finally got it in. It was a beautiful sea trout on the bottom hook. The fish was in brilliant condition and felt full of roe. It weighed in at 5 lbs 12 oz and a new personal best for me. Breaking my previous best by 2 lbs! I put it back in gently, after about 20 seconds of holding it it flapped its tail and went out to fight another day. Decided to pack up after that, was a nice day, glad i went out today instead of last night! :)

 Wow. And to think I've bought a sea trout licence two years running and never even got a tiddler... :?

BTW what bait did it go for or was there a mixture on the one hook?

Fisherman's prayer:
God grant that I may live to fish, For another rainy day.
But when my final cast is made, I then most humbly pray.
When nestled in your landing net, As I lay peacefully asleep.
You'll smile at me and judge, That I'm "good enough to keep"!

Cracking sea trout, well done. I wonder why, as its full of roe, that its not up the top of the river system doing what nature intended though. Anyone any ideas??
