Results:1 Lemon Sole 2 Flounder 2 Plaice 18 sand dab
4 rockling 2 whiting
Report:Had the dinner and headed off to a mark to meet blustery gales but were well prepared for them. 1st attempted cast rod broke luckily had a spare in jeep 1st cast a whiting and rockling but then we were in business
I reeled in a nice dab in fact very nice weighs 500 grams or 1.1 pounds. On the specimen board its 1 and 1/2 pounds but on this site its a pound for a specimen dab
Continued with a very successful evening with dabs and the remainder of the other species.
On the last cast reeled in a sorta lemon sole small. The whole of the evening which was absolutely brill even if 1 of our rods was broken. Great fishing but not great weather elements

Fisherman's prayer:
God grant that I may live to fish, For another rainy day.
But when my final cast is made, I then most humbly pray.
When nestled in your landing net, As I lay peacefully asleep.
You'll smile at me and judge, That I'm "good enough to keep"!

With all do respect mate whoever put up the report also said at the end "Please let me know about the specimen sizes and the attached photo of the lemon sole" ... and as eric is infact an expert on flat fish im sure he ment no wrong and was purely advising ur son for his own benefit .. and fair play to him too by the way it sounds like you's had a great session

ok
just to be sure, the fish on the chopping board is a flounder, i thought thats what he meant by the specimen dabs. lemon soles are very rare, ok super rare. its easy to see how an novice could mistake one for a dab

Choping board pic is a flounder and none of the other fish are sole, lads better off knowing than burying your heads in the sand hope no offence is taken as none is meant, eric can come accross as abrasive but hes a pussycat realy
Lads maybe its the quality of the pic or something but its definitely a dab. The sand on it may look like the black marks of a flounder Thanks lads will edit my report

unfrtunatley the fish on the chopping board is definitely a flounder, a good weay to tell them apart is to rub your finger backwards along their back. a dabs skin is rough rubbed this way whereas a flounders in smooth. also the lateral line of a dab takes a sharp semi circle turn around the pelelvic fin, a flounders does not. it a nice sized flounder though

Well I always just went by if its a mix of orange spots and a small shade of black its a dab but a flounder has only black markings. I'm sorry Eric but I'm still certain its a dab but will let you know when we eat it Theres more of a fishy taste off the flounder than the dab me da finds. Personnally I'm not a fan of either I'm more a bass or cod fan

colouration is a not an accurate way to distinguish flatfish, dabs are usually always baige with small pale orange spot, whereas a flounder can be light baige to dark brown in colouration, they can have orange spot and balck blotching. the underside of the fish is also a good indicatator, dabs tend to be see through white, a flunder is usaully mate white.
heres a few links to help you distinguish between species, and enjoy the fish

Eh well this fish also has a roughy line along its front if you know what I mean. Look I'll try and get me da to eat a dab and flounder for dinner he'll know the difference tastewise

yep, thats a rige of nodules that run along its lateral line, its synonimous with a flounder, a dab doesnt have them but its skin is rough all over when rubbed backwards
