Bay Watch South Connemara 03.12.09

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: vinnycorrigan, MC, stevecrow74 & myself

Duration: 16:00-01:30

Tide: HT @ 17:37 5.17m 16.9ft

Weather: Dry with a NW breeze, mild and bright night

Bait: Sandeel, Mackerel, Squid, Lug, Wraps, Herring

Rigs: Various

Results: Dabs, Doggies, Coalfish, Cod, Pollack, Poor Cod, Pouting, Thornback Ray, Whiting

Report: Vinny and myself arrived at the mark and set up we were fishing about 2hrs before MC and steve arrived with only whiting to show for our efforts. I was fishing at distance hitting a channel thats known to hold fish steve was doing likewise i'd a couple of doggies while steve had 2 Thornies on successive casts and dropped another when his snood snapped trying to lift it. Vinny had clocked up nearly 20 whiting by the time the lads arrived and he kept up a frantic pace with them doubles trebles most casts, MC in the meantime had a whiting to get off the mark. Vinny then got his personal target species with a wee Cod and landed a dog also. While steve got a nice Poor Cod and i'd a Pouting along with plenty of whiting for us both. Steve and MC headed off around the 20:30 mark and myself and vinny set up a 2nd rod. We dropped them 15 yards out and were getting nailed on them within seconds of the bait hitting the water. The fishing was non stop action until we finished with the species tally rising. Vinny finished up with 5 species with over 60 Whiting 12 or so Coalies, 1 Doggie, 1 Cod, and a Pollack. I finished up with 5 species with 3 Doggies, 2 Dabs, 1 Coalie, 1 Pouting and close on 30 whiting. Steve and MC can add their tallys....

Both steve and myself had whiting hit steves had deep puncture wounds while mine was completely savaged

Not sure what hit mine possibly a big crab or lobster plenty of both in this location along with good congers and there were 5 seals on their backs when we were setting up too.... with steve's he could feel the extra weight when he went to reel in he said it was pulling back so who knows.... vinny tried live baiting a whiting with no hook up :?

told ye that place would hold ray all year round...

nice wee session... would love to know what was holding on to the whiting.. i think it was a ray by the way it was fighting back.. pity it let go before it surfaced...

was wondering why ye stayed on so long after, but knowing you salty.. you wanted a ray

i got a whiting, the night got worse for me, went out for a pint and never drank it, i had eaten at a well know fastfood joint at lunchtime and it seems that it disagreed with me, was sick from 11pm until 5.30am, only starting to eat again tonight, sorry to nige and stevecrow it ended up a short drinking session
