Cork harbour conger hunt 02-12-09

#1 Post by evan699 »

People: me and seany
Weater: Calm and cold
Time: 7.00pm to 10.00pm
Rigs: Ledger
Bait: Mack & Squid

Me and seany wrapped up in the warmest gear we could find and set out in the search for congers. We hit the mark at about 7 with the tide dropping fast. We set up the gear and cast the lines and i started to get good bites within a few minutes. I gave the reel a couple of winds and straight away knew i was into somethin big. My rod tip dipped down and stayed down. It took me 5 minutes to get any line back and my arms were tiring quick. I held the rod tip high and i could feel the fish ducking and diving hard, i held on tight to keep him up off the bottom and finally managed to surface the fish. Me and seany got the first look at the big white belly of a nice conger rolling and tumbling on the surface. I bullied him up to the wall and seany pulled him up. A few pictures and he went back with a big splash and the lines were set again. A few minutes later my rod tip dropped again. I lifted and got a few feet of line back. It fought similar to the first one but it managed to get a grip on the bottom and pulled the arms off me for about 20 minutes. I finally landed it. Puffing and panting with my arms hanging off, slightly smaller fish but great fight. Quick picture and back he went. I hooked another one, and at this stage i could barely keep a grip on my rod cause my arms were so tired after the first two. So the tactic was to pull like f**k and get him in quick. 5 minute fight and he spat the hook just as i got him to surface. Another nice fish but i'll have to go back for him another day. All in all a good night. The plan is now to re gut my reel and get out there again as soon as i have a chance. Seany was unlucky and missed/lost a few fish but we'll be more prepared the next time.

Cheers for reading,
Tight Lines,
Evan

I don't know what weight it was. The scales i had with me was only a toy. Grand for two three pound fish but i'll have to get a good digi one for the bigger fish.

I bought a cheep pier caster especially for the job. 30lb main line and 60lb shock leader. The lighter the better.

Seany will upload a few more pictures from his camera later. I wasn't going to kiss one but i was holding the second fish up for a pic and he swung his head round and snapped right in front of my nose so i think ill keep my face at a nice distance from them in future.
