high rocks galway 2/12/09

#1 Post by chrisfeeney30 »

People:myself

Duration:5 hours

Tide:massive, then dropping

Weather:calm, mild and dry

Bait:mackeral and squid

Rigs:portsmoth, pennel pully and 3 hook flappers

Results:22 whiting, 12 coalies, 1 x flounder, 5 bearded rockling and a dogfish

Report:Couldnt resist getting out for a few hours today, got down to the rocks, tide was very high. It was as high as it usually gets so i set up at the top of the rocks as far out as i could, how wrong was i, big sweels started to come in and knocked my tripod over, and nearly some other gear with it! retreated back further, same happened so i went back even further! At this point there was about 7 ft of water one side and about 12ft on the other, found a nice safe part and started fishing :D :D Wanted to try get a few codling out at distance and said i would put a flapper in close on my other rod. 1st two casts on both rods had no fish, then i got a nice triple shot of whiting and flounder to kick start the fishing :D :D fish were coming in every cast, doubles mostly. fish were small in close but got coalies to 28 cms and whiting to 27 cms at distance on squid/mack wraps. Then i got a nice bige on my rod at distance which turned out to be a little doggie, smallest one iv caught to date, about 35 cms long :D Cool little one! all was normal till i got a nice bite on my bze then another.. then another then bang a massive one! Struck into the fish, doubled over the rod and started to taake line, not knowing what it was i let it have some and after about 5 minutes of action i saw a conger of about 7 lbs along with a coalies on the top and bottom hook! I carefully started to bring it to the rocks but once i lifted it, it let go, put my head down, looked up and there was half a whiting left on the hook! I was fishing over clen ground but it must of been out from the nearby rocks feeding on the sholes of whiting! Took out a pennel pully put casted it out to the same area but no luck, took a few more fishless casts like this. Then i got a nice little 5 bearded rockling in close, new species for the year :D. After that it was just more coalies and whiting for the last few casts. Overall it was an action filled session, i was kept busy for the session. Packed up at 8 pm, got a double sot of coalies on my last cast, i could have stayed there all night if i had more bait and food :D 37 fish in total, happy days! i Didnt get a chance to take many pictures, will post a few later..
