The Kingdom of Bass 27-29 Nov 09
People: Me & Harry
Duration: 27 - 29 Nov 09
Tide: All states
Weather: Sleet, Wind & then calm
Bait: Lug, Rag, Razor, Peeler Crab, Sandeel
Rigs: Dropper rigs, Pulley Rigs, Flapper rigs
Results: Schoolie Bass
Report:
Harry jnr texted me and asked if I wanted to hit kerry for bass. So kerry was in the boot (joke) and we got to the kingdom on friday about 11pm. After 6 hours of pure filth-talk it was time to get some bass fishing done. so we dropped the gear off and we were on the beach for 11.45pm. 15 minutes later the first schoolie was lifted out of the water. As you will discover as you read on I dont take the best of pictures (chandler outa friends springs to mind). 2 hours later we both had bass to talk about heading home.. which took all of 30 seconds
We got up early on saturday (9am) and were on the road to a small beach on top of the dingle peninsuila, we got there about 11am. I can't remember what its called because harry picked it and it was dirt with a capital filth. so we spent all of an hour and a half there before heading to a beach called furmoyle (i think that's right) we got there at 1.30pm. I caught a small schoolie, but the highlight of the beach was watching around 30 schoolie bass surfing in the waves no more that 25 yards away from me. an amazing sight.. needless to say harry said I was spoofing.
we spilt from there and heading from some food.. can I hear a 'hell yeah' for a donar meat and chips with house sauce.
we got to the next venue about 8.30pm. were Roy had caught 10 schoolies in 45 mins. so the both of us quickly set up and caught a couple of bass each. we then moved on up to the toilet blocks were the fishing was awesome, with other two catching a variety of bass, flounder, dab, whiting, coalie, pollock as I had a wee sleep on my box. so at 12.30am I called it a night.
We were very kindly invited to the Tralee Bay open comp on Beal beach at 4pm on the sunday. so again up early (9am) we went and dug some lug, maddies and white rag on the sunday. Some how the a robbin had got into the car and decided to have party in harry's car. he had left prezzies all over the car for us to find.
We quickly tied some rigs, because im awesome at cracking off and dropping rigs into the surf.
We met up with Joss out of the Tralee Bay SAC (sound fella) at 1pm and heading onto the comp on the shannon estuary. We got the comp for 3pm and drew pegs. I drew peg 25 (last peg on the beach) 'ack sure I'll not need my humpalumpa I said on friday leaving Belfast'.
With a strong to gale force wind in our faces it was tough but the wind died off.
for the first 2 hours I couldnt buy a fish and with fish coming in to the fella next to me. I put got the thinking cap on and went asked harry what he caught his fish on. huh fifty.
and because I had fluffed so many of my reels he lent me his 15ft fixed spool rod to use .. I reckon that the rod was just pure bad luck and changed over to my AA Surf.. I have to explain to ya.. that this rod has to be the luckiest rod ive ever owned. it has won my first ever comp, pulled a 9lb thornie out of the swilly and even caught a salmon in the sea. so within 15 minutes of changing rods.. yes you guessed it, a durty 32cm schoolie was delicately lifted out of the surf. So two hours later and with 3 bass and 1 whiting counting. I gave my card over and arranged to meet the guys in a local bar for food and drink. The owners and Tralee Bay SAC had arranged some great grub. The results were called.. in third place was harry .... me in second and a local fella, Aidan in first. check out there report below
http://www.traleebaysac.org/matchreports.htm
So off we went delighted that we done so well and only to be quickly to be brought back down to earth with a thump. Harry had a cheeky pint with his food and just as we passed through Tralee. The Garda were having random strip searches.. 'wrong story'... I mean random breathalyzers. Hearts in mouths The Garda officer said 'you see that' both of us trying to see the thing....... youv'e passed.. huh.. although Harry only had one pint it was to close for comfort so we both vowed never ever to have even one drinkypooes when driving.
We got back to the digs about 12am and checked out the beach and decided to give it a go for half an hour. it was more to throw the unused bait to the schoolies. Harry got one small schoolie and we packed up shortly after.
such a weekend and such a place.. I will definitley be down very soon
I have loads of pictures to load so I will hopefully get them up tomorrow

it was pure fluke. I was fishing for flounder using ragworm and fishing from a beach(saltwater). It was carefully released.
