sunday night east cork

#1 Post by seany/cork »

day : sunday the 8th of nov

place : east cork

people : evan699 and my self

bait : sandeel mack rag

fish ; cod whiting hake lobster and a hefty lsd (evan first flatty)well done boy

time ; 6 to 11.30

after setting out from home my self and evan headed east from the city weather was not to bad there was a bit of a nip in the air . after arriving in a location in east cork not one of my fave,s we started with single pennal and 3hook baits mak and rag . first cast evan hit in too 2 whiting ok size .me still nothing . But it was only going to get worse soon as evan casted out again he was on . this would take for ever so i will just skip on a hour . evan was landing number 30 yes 30 mixture of hake cod and whiting , when my rod decided it did not like me and almost jumped off the stand it was fighting hard like nothing i ever hook . loads of thing went true my mind 'was it a string of fish in the current or was it a weeeed fish
it final got it to the surface but only for a minute when it took a dive .finaly got it on dry land a lobster wat treat
at this time evan was still fishing hard it was nearing high and he was on number 40 mostly cod and whiting that was success in its self the fish started getting bigger and bigger so we decided to fish on i still was way behind evan with only 20 we think it was over the past few session when he drew a blank and i hooked a few .
its great to catch wat you set out for and evan done that he caught his first flatty he was happy out.
while he was rebating his line again my rod decided to hop on the strike i new it was a fish and new it was nothing small my rod was on full bend and i could hardly reel .fought it for about 10 min and to my dismay it was a lsd but wat a size biggest fish all nightbut while this was going on and i had my few battles with some fish evan raked up 53fish excluding a star fish he had caught . to my 27and lobster .
all in all it was a great session still on abuzz from it , so final tally

evan669 53

seany (me) 27 plus lobster

thinking of freezing him and trying him for bait .?

Re: sunday night east cork hake?

Hi lads- never caught a hake (below), I thought you'd only catch them off boats. Is it a deep water venue?

it is deep water alright .
ya we were surprised at it too . they were only just over a pound but i caught a load of small one,s last year in kinsale . my mate is a monger and he said they were hake .
and wat we hooked was the exact same as before . they were fairly spread out maybe one in every 15 was one and with out checking properly you might think it was a whiting ..
there are reports on other sites and ever in wiki about ireland and hake .. maybe our look is in this winter lads ..
re: picture yep that's the one just a bit smaller than that.well a lot smaller .
there is a name on them something ...... cod but there small hake .

I'm still only learning the basics of sea angling so i'm not the best with species identification. I'm still not positive of what the fish were. I'll try to get a photo of one of them up later. I still haven't figured out how the photo upload works on this site.

this is one of the fish that were being questioned above. First time uploading a photo so i hope it's clear enough to shed some light on the species ID. If it works i'll chuck up a few more photos of the session.

Cheers

I hadn't a clue what it was anyway so i'm just glad to know it's edible and i didn't poisin my god mother. Still nice fish and good fighters on the right kind of gear. Are the fish that look the same as this with a pinkish back on them another kind of whiting. I forgot my forecips the night i caught 53 of them and my fingers are fairly torn up over them. Fair set of teeth on them.
