SAI SAC MA#6 Toberpatrick Co. Wexford - Sponsored by Henrys

#1 Post by alby »

People: Kstaff, Keith M., D'Fella (Conor), Mark the fishaholic, JD, Boycie, Eric, Cormac & Me

Duration:2:15 - 7:15

Tide:5 hours of flood

Weather:North Westerly, easing off as the day went on

Bait:everything

Rigs: mainly 3 hook flappers & assorted

Results:Flounders, Coalies, Whiting, Rockling, Dogs & Bass

Report:
It was a fresh north westerly that greeted the 9 SAI hopefuls at Toberpatrick yesterday. A decent sea running, with plenty of colour in the water and only a little "dirt" made for very favourable conditions.

We kicked off @ 2.15, and from the first cast there was a decent number of coalies & flounder being caught on assorted worm & fish baits. Eric, Boycie & JD on pegs 3, 4 & 5 were having a right old ding dong, trading fish for fish in the first hour or so. Myself & Cormac on pegs 1 & 2 were picking up a few fish but not to the extent of the lads in the middle, meanwhile the lads on the higher numbers were struggling to keep up with the young bucks (and JD  )

The coalies switched off and then it became a "flattie battle" & Boycie was now picking up doubles regularly, much to the annoyance of the rest of us. He was in front as the fishing slowed, but I began to locate a few fish a little further out than the rest of the lads who were "dipping" for flats. It got really quiet for about 90 minutes, (for everyone except for me  ) and I just kept getting single & double flounders, every cast, using exactly the same traces & baits as everyone else, very strange, but I certainly wasn't complaining!

Into darkness and the sea flattened off and tempreture dropped, but thank god the whiting didn't arrive!! The flatties were still eagerly chomping baits along the stretch, but I had built up a decent lead during the quiet spell. I knew it was my day when I got a decent bite and reeled a rockling & doggie double - both hooked on maddies!! The fishing was a little patchy for the last hour but a few dogs came to those on the low pegs, I had another, so did Boycie, Eric & Cormac.

A great days fishing, I had 29 fish to win, and a decent mix of species. Everyone caught, and well done to Conor (D'fella) on his first comp, he certainly seemed to enjoy himself!

Big thanks to Henry of Henry's Tackle for his generous sponsorship (yet again) - http://www.henrystackleshop.com/

Excellent Report Alby....

Nice fishing lads and that was some haul considering you guys were not plagued by whiting. Excellent fishing all Round.

Well Done Conor on your first comp. Hopefully you enjoyed it in the tough conditions.

found it really tough going during that quite spell, was fishless for a good 90min while watching alby bringin in a fish a cast. determination and not giving up finally led to a doggie, and for the last 45 min i manage too add 8 more fish :D

Great report indeed Alby. Really enjoyed that match lark with small baits in close, all new to me but highly enjoyable nonetheless! :D

1 doggie at range justified my decision to go long! :D

Right just to clear something up here. I was led to believe from certain sources that the SAI comps were a relaxed affair, with lads standing around having a chat between fishing. I was lied to!

From the get go the lads were like knights in battle and running, baiting, casting, unhooking, recording etc. Within five minutes I was dizzy and behind! Then it got really confusing with with Keith telling me to only cast 20-30 yards  everything I thought I knew was out the window! I picked up an undersized Codling and then with a fish in I settled into it.

Everybody who was there came to see how I was doing and offered help and suggestions. All of which I was grateful for and put to immediate use. I only met most of the lads for the first time but everybody was helpful and welcoming. I was pegged beside Keith who was really helpful through out the whole day. And with consent check in's from Boycie and Eric I was able to relax and even enjoy the day.

As for the fishing it was hard going with so much run off from the roads and fields after a bad night of rain. When weed isn't a problem but twigs and leaf's are you have to through everything at it. I was disappointed with only one counter and three fish at 19cm's  And on my second last cast I could feel a dead weight on my line and I really thought I had a dog or two. I knew this would lift me off the bottom and began to smile at the thoughts of second last place. I was gutted to find a 19.5cm rockling on the top hook and a foul hooked glove on the bottom hook. It was full of sand and stones so that was the weight I had felt. This really left me gutted and despite my best efforts on my last cast I could not pick up a doggie.

Over all it was brilliant to try out the comp and I strong;y urge anyone thinking of trying it giving it a go. Or even an open day cause everybody will welcome you, help you, guide you, advise you. Everything I learnt over the last few years of fishing helped but with talking to the lads and getting simple tips it really made the difference.

Thanks to everybody yesterday for their time and help and I look forward to fishing a match again really soon.

Fair play to you Conor, that's what club fishing is all about. Stick at it and you cannot fail to become a better angler.

I would urge anyone else thinking about trying competition fishing to give it a go. The camaraderie is great & you'll definitley catch more fish as a result of tips picked up, even when pleasure fishing.

I enjoyed this comp with everyone getting a few fish, i didn't get a chance to catch much mself as i was busy marking albys card :D :D, i think he only had one blank cast for the day, he put on great show, with boycie and eric snapping at his heels also. Fair play to connor aswell who battled hard throughout the day in less than ideal conditions.

a very big well done on what looked like agreat day out also a fab report its great to see fish been caught there as iv fished
ther quite a bit and blanked quite a bit. on the response that followed id like to say this i have gained huge knowledge and expiriance from the boat section of this site they have answered question after question truthfully and freely also i have been given marks as to wherei would get different species. if the shore sectionof this forum/club starts making rieports and
because of some gripe cant give the location of the beach they have fished i dont see any point in putting a report up
kilpatrick beach is about 2 miles long on that stretch i have about 6 different marks so what harm is there in telling that
a club comp was fished on toberpatrick and what fish were caught after all we share the same flag sai what im saying is what makes this site different to others is everyone is helpful and if this was to change i dont think there would be many members left we all have our secret marks but on a 2 mile stretch i think the lad could have bee cut some slack especialy as it was a sai comp

Hi Jay,
It was well worth having a bash. I think the club will be taking new memberships soon and not only is it a big club with some great anglers it's one of the cheapest memberships around too. I was really taken a back at how extremely helpful everybody was.

As for a consultation prize I think robbed bait from Boycie and donated traces from Eric added up to a nice haul

And Coyser nobody's hand (thankfully) was in the glove. The worst thing was it wasn't under size

you missed my point alby did not mention a mark he simply told truthfully where a sai club comp was held and this is the point if i go to toberpatrick tomorrow i wouldent have a clue as to where they fished its 2 miles long and im well aware
of the pm system use it regularly my self this was a sai club comp posted on the site for everyone to see i feel the lad that
made the report done a good job and did not deserve to be critized for doing so.also does this mean anyone making a shore
report will not give the location?ie greystones killiney ennereilly?if so whats the use in making the report do you just pm the choseing few i feel if that was the case no one will bother

Yes I see that, why was my post removed ? What is the point in taking the time to give constructive answers if they can just be removed ?
