donegal rock and pier 25.10.09

#1 Post by last cast lad »

People:me

Duration:5.00-10.00

Tide:rising

Weather:blustery, good swell

Bait:squid and mackeral

Rigs:pulley

Results:3 three bearded rockling, strap congor

Report:went to a rock mark that I have high hopes for over the winter swells :!: Arrived and set up in daylight on a nice safe ledge about 20 feet above the low tide water, unfortunately as the tide turned the swell increased but in the darkness the sea spray slapping my face began to freak me out. It was all safe though I was even wearing ny trusty flotation suit but when I had to go to the edge of the ledge to winch up a fish I heard the crash of waves 20 foot below me hitting the rocks and got a slap in the face from more sea spray   Must confess I screamed like a girl  and decided no fish is worth this( 2 three bearded rockling either side of 30 cm)
So I decided to head to the safety of a local pier for an hour to steady my nerves again, put out a flapper rig with size 1 hooks (never had a mini species, had mini fish though if that counts  ) and also put out a congor trace, there seems to be congor at just about every pier in Ireland. Now we all pride ourselves on rig building  and bait presentation  to target paticular species but sometimes it seems that the fish just laugh at us :!: The rod with flapper rig gave a massive knock and went dead heavy, suspecting a raft of weed I began to wind in and the weed fought back and turned out to be a strap congor about 70cm took a delicate bait on size 1 hook  . Meanwhile the congor rod had been giving gentle crab like pulls so I wound in to check bait and found a 41cm three bearded rockling after a dirty big mackeral head and lip hooked by a size5.0hook

dont you just hate it when those pesky fish dont understand which bait is theirs!!!!! :D :D :D :D

had it before myself - conger on tiny baits meant for minis - an micro fish commiting 'suicide by conger rig'

crackin rockling, and any size conger is always well worth catchin
