Wicklow beach, 25-10-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:4pm-8-30pm approx

Tide:falling

Weather:ok,showery

Bait:rag,manky mack,squid

Rigs:pulleys, 2 hook flappers

Results: doggies, whiting, codling

Report:Himmed and hawwed all morning as to whether i'd go out today(sun) or monday and in the end went out in the afternoon to a wicklow beach to get some sand all over my gear and maybe even a few fish  . Got off to a bad start when i discovered no leader on one of my two reels i was using  . Put new leader on, got set up and cast out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,which resulted in a snagged trace  , had to pull for a break  .Next cast and i connected with my target species, codling, and i reeled in a fine specimen of about 8 inches :? :? ,but at least I was off the mark  .My second rod was out about 20-30yds or so and I lost two traces on it but not before getting another codling which i'm sure would have beaten my previous record of 8 inches if only the crabs hadnt eaten half of him.  He wasnt a pretty sight :? In between all the tackle losses I noticed a decent bite and reeled in a doggie as fast as i could to stop getting snagged,,i was starting to get the hang of this place. When it got dark, I put away the second rod to concentrate on losing gear on just one rod   , as my spool of leader had run out. I got another doggie in between a couple of whiting but when i got snagged again i had had enough and could hear the words,"Lets get outta this joint 8) ",going round and round in my head.I packed up and headed back up the beach to the car. Met some guys from the site who swore me to secrecy but i hope they had good luck afterwards   .All in all not a bad evenings fishing, good to be out and about, and at least i wasnt targeting tiddlers for a change, even though they were impaling themselves on my hooks, and i saw 2 shooting stars,,,,,,,,,,,,,,stop fooling yourself Dave   ,,,,should have left it to monday

Well done on getting a few fish despite the snags.

That's bad - must be very vicious crabs in Wicklow to eat half a fish that's on the end of a hook   - not the place to go paddling in your bare feet

How ye dave, Fair play on the fish, you had more than we did. That spot can fish very well for codling after a blow, but alas not last night. I don't think the small tide helped.

The sand is where it's at!!

nice sesh; again dave 8) and pic's 8)
that mark sounds like a tackle graveyard, maybe try a few rotten bottom rigs with nuts or bolts to save on your leads.
and if the crabs are as vicious as that down your way, then i wont like to meet one of your congers

fair play for sticking it out dave and getting a few fish :D :D :D constantly having to re rig and tie shock leaders can suck the fun outta a session  but at least you got a few for your perseverance   well done man.
