Wicklow Harbour, 23-10-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:5pm-9pm

Tide:falling

Weather:mild , ok to start, then heavy rain

Bait:rag, mack

Rigs:conger traces, 2 hook flapper

Results:pollock, wrasse and pouting

Report:went to Wicklow pier which was pleasantly sheltered from the breeze when I turned the corner. Only one angler there, who said things were very slow all day  .I set up down the end and put a small rag bait out on the small rod while i was getting the conger rod ready. The small rod was pulled off the stand and i quickly grabbed it to find a wrasse on the end of the line   .The other lad had a decent sized dab at exactly the same time   ,,,,,,,,,,,,then nothing else. He packed up happy that he had saved the blank and left me to it. I never got a touch on either rod for the next 2 hours   . Fishface arrived down to see how I was getting on.Just like to pass on my condolences as he's lost his father in the last week, and his mum's not too well at the moment either so he's a lot going on. He still has his legendary sense of humour though and is growing a Pancho Villa moustache   When he left I moved nearer the lighthouse to try to even get a bite and this paid off in moments with a small pollock. No bigger ones out there ,though I did get a thumper of a bite which turned out to be a pouting , my biggest to date, around 25cms. I forgot my ruler but the scissors is 13cms and it was easily twice the length, quite chunky too. The vertical bars were really striking in the glare of the headlight.Thats about it, it started to lash rain and I said, "Hump this", or words to that effect, and began to pack up. No conger tonight, but there again, do I really want to catch one when i'm on me own     ,,,and not a clue what to do next   I had visions of throwing a towel over it, straddling it and trying to wrench the hook out    ,,,,,,,,,,then I woke up   Maybe next time

Nice pouting, at least you got a few fish - I tried fishing last night but the weed was terrible - I just had one cast and spent the next 20 minutes trying to drag in a ton of kelp.
Today I didn't even bother going fishing as the wind as picked up again so it won't have got any better (I normally go fishing every Saturday).
