Cod at Wexford mark 23/10/09

#1 Post by Security man »

People: Myself & Philip

Duration:8.30pm to 11pm

Tide:Over the top

Weather:Gale force 5, heavy drizzle

Bait:Crab & Mackrel

Rigs:4/0 Pulley Pennels

Results:Cod (1), Smoothhound (1), Doggies (4), Flounder (1), Bullhuss (1).

Report:
Decided to use up the crab left over from last weekend - I knew there was a big blow on the way which would probably render all marks unfishable for the next week or so, so we decided to bite the bullet and brave the weather.
That decision turned out to be a good one, which saw us pull 5 species between us, in less than 3hrs. 8)

Got to the mark about 8.30pm, to be greeted with weather more appropriately seen on 'Deadliest Catch' - 7ft rollers crashing down on the beach, and a wind that made the beach buddies look like kites!
After anchoring down our gear, we put out a test line each - no point in putting a second line out until we evaluated the weed situation. Surprisingly there was very little weed at all - hardly any in fact, as the wind was only begining to get up.

From that point on, we didn't even get time to consider putting another line in the water - Phil had a fish every cast, and I had one 'nearly' every cast! :o
Phil was in first, with the mother of all dogfish - closely followed by myself with 'junior'. It was difficult enough to register bites on the rods due to the rollers and the wind. The whole 2.5hrs was a case of "retrieve, switch, cast, rebait", "retrieve, switch, cast, rebait" with very little time for anything else.
Phil was up again, this time with a 1.5lb Cod, who hammered his crab  - followed by me with another Doggie.
The pace continued, with Phil nailing a flounder and me nailing a small smoothie. We had the odd dog in between.
Phil managed to connect with a Bullhuss on the last cast.

All in all it was a great session, well worth braving the weather for - even if we did only go down for Bass!!
Pics aren't great, taken on a camera phone... :(
