west cork beach 22-10-09

#1 Post by red »

People: just me

Duration: 2000-2300

Tide: hw 2047

Weather: good breeze kickin up a nice surf

Bait: lug, squid, crab, razor and 2 manky sand eel i found in the freezer

Rigs: running ledger and 2 hook flapper

Results: 1 flounder and 1 small strap conger

Report:
hadnt been out in a while so got the night off and headed out to my usual Bass spot. as i expected the place i usually fish was pretty weedy so headed up to the further end of the beach and it was well fishable. sent out crab and a razor/lug cocktail on one rod and started setting up the 2nd. before i finished i got what looked loke a good take so struck hoping it was a Bass. i could feel it kicking but not Bass like. landed a nice plunp flounder of 36cms, nicely hooked in the jaw. easiest flounder i ever unhooked :D . quick pick and back he went.
sent both rods out after that full of hope. not long after i started getting small knocks on the other rod which looked like weed. i pulled it in and it was clean so sent it back out to roughly the same spot. got the small knocks again so held it and struck. fish on, felt small but better than nothing. landed a small strap conger.
nothing else after that and around 2230 the weed started to come up the beach so i packed up and left.
both fish took the crab.

Good to see you getting back out again. At least you got a couple of fish - I reckon the weed will be bad on the beaches for a while after all that stormy weather, although I will probably head out myself tonight for the first bit of bait fishing in ages after all the lure fishing.

I headed out last night to my favourite East Cork beach - had one cast and that was enough. Within about 20 seconds the rod tip started to bend over and then pull to the side. I spent the next 20 minutes struggling with a monster weedfish until my line snapped.

Packed up, went home and had a few cans of beer.

the conditions loked perfect for Bass. if i had stuck it out a bit longer nearer to low water i reckon i might have got a few but the weed went from clear to ok to bad in an hour so id probably have been cleaning the line non stop so packed up.

hard luck frank. i bet the beers were good tho :D .
