Wexford 16th 17th & 18th Oct 2009

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: nige, shamoo0804, adam2040 & myself

Duration: 4 sessions

Tide: all evening HT's

Weather: not too bad light NW swinging NE then S

Bait: Rag, Lug, Mackerel, Squid, Sandeel, Mussel, Fresh Crab, Razor

Rigs: Flappers, Pulleys, Loop Rigs, Boom Rigs, Single Flowing, Running Legders

Results: Bass, Flounder, Dab, Common Smooth Hound, Coalies, Whiting, Cod

Report: Session 1 Fri 21:30-04:00
With nige still a Bass virgin and time running out for him to get one before he heads West across the big pond. I promised to get him one in Wexford as i was heading over for a few days. We'd arranged to meet up with shamoo0804 for a couple of sessions and met him in Courtown Angling Centre where we picked up some fresh bait with monster Rag thick as your thumb jobs 8) After a feed of steaks and a couple of pints. We decided to stay close by and hit a venue where decent Bass had been showing up including a couple earlier in the day. Shamoo was first in getting some flatties 4 i think and a couple of dogs and a wee cod, nige had 1 dog and a five bearded rockling his first of the year, i'd 2 dabs 2 flounder and 6 whiting. It was slow fishing with nothing to get excited about. So back to base a sup of Brandy.

Session 2 Sat 14:00-17:00

We decided with the water being clear we'd do a short lure session. I wasn't that optimistic despite a few being taken on lures at this venue as the tide wasn't great for it but we'd a few hours to kill so off we went. Nothing to report didn't see any fish not even sandeels etc

Session 3 Sat 20:30-04:00

Stopped off at Courtown to pick up some fresh bait and bumped into adam2040 who'd a bag full of lug in his hand. "which way you going North or South i asked" "South he says" "Hmm bag of lug heading South are you going to _ _ _ _ _ i says" "how'd ya guess he says"  Turns out we were on our way to the same mark. We stopped of for a couple of pints on route when we'd got there Adam2040 had a wee Bass accounted for a good sign we thought might just get nige off the mark so. Shamoo, Adam and myself were picking off a few fish nige was finding it slow going. Shamoo got the next Bass a small fella also, he picked up a few flounder too. Myself and adam were getting a few flounder i'd 6 and adam wasn't far off that either. Shamoo got a second wee Bass i followed suit with a small Bass and nige had picked up a couple of flounders. Adam had packed up and were chatting away i said to nige move in there were adam was but he said he'd stay put after a few casts with no Bass. He decided to move in between myself and shamoo were adam had been. First cast and a good rattle and nige was soon smilling as his first ever Bass was landed 8) 8) Was delighted for him as a fair few miles on various trips around the country finally paid off. Pressure was off now we fished on for another little while we me getting a 2nd Bass :) then back to base for munchies and Brandy.

Session 4 Sun 19:30-02:30

Shamoo headed for Dublin and nige and myself headed for more bait. I'd a mark in mind for this evening which usually produces the goods. Arrived to pick up some bait got chatting and another mark was suggested so flip of a coin and the new mark it was. We had to stop back at base to pick up some bits n pieces and a change of mind later i decided to go with my initial gut instict on the original venue for the evening. Arrived got set up (put nige in the hot spot) first cast and nige had landed his 2nd ever Bass 8) In for a good sesson we thought things went slow for nige after that with his next fish not coming till 23:00  in between i'd landed 2 Dabs 3 Flounder a baby common smut a whiting.... we're sitting there chatting away nige i think was getting bored with the lack of action when his rod tip gets a bang Bass number 3 was landed 8) he had only unhooked and returned this one when the other rod went and Bass number 4 was landed  were going to get a run of them i said get your rods back out quick. I was walking back to my rods when i got hit and my first Bass of the evening came in :) nige then went on a roll picking up a coalie and another 4 Bass including the best of the night a 46cm 8) 8) I was delighted for him i got another 2 Bass and some whiting. The wind picked up a bit and the fishing died with no fishing coming in the last hour and a half so we packed up back to base for more Brandy. Nige having never caught a Bass before finished with 7 for that sesssion and 8 in total, thats the Bass hoodoo smashed so

Great to be out with Conor again, nice to meet you also nige, and I'm made up for you now you finally got off the mark with your 1st ever bass, and what did I tell you the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc wouldnt be far behind the 1st. Great you got a decent one aswell as the wee babies - thats dinner tonight sorted

Having arrived in courtown an hour or so before the lads were due on friday, I had a couple of casts on the beach to the right of the harbour, with the light fading, tide rising and a bit of chop in the sea I was hoping for a bass, didnt get my bar of silver but did manage a coalie and a dab.

1st nights fishing was slow enough, but I did manage a codling of around 30cm aswell as the dogs and flounder.

Shame the tide wasnt really right for our brief session with the lures, the sea conditions looked perfect for it.

Glad you decided to stick to the original plan for last night, it certainly paid dividends, and a baby smut too 8)
