Donaghadee 17/10/09

#1 Post by Drew »

People: Heather and I

Duration: 9.30am - 2pm (Heather 11am - 1pm)

Tide: High

Weather: Gorgeous! Like it should have been in July! No Wind, Sun, Omg it was perfect!

Bait: Sweet Sweet Ragworm.

Rigs: 2 Hooks Scratchers, 3 Hook Boom Rigs, Float Setup.

Results: Around 30 Ballan Wrasse to 2.5lb, 4 Corkwing Wrasse, 3 Goldsinney Wrasse, 3 Pollack around 8oz, 2 Shore Rockling, 1 of which was 30cm, 1 Coalie of about 1.5lb, Loads of Whiting up to about 20cm, Some Small Codling, a couple of pouting.

Report:

Best session in Donaghadee for a long, long time. and I didn't bring a camera! I'm gutted! But seriously that was the sort of session you go out for! Lots of small stuff interspersed with stuff that gave you a serious tug!

Started off at the Chain, casting into the channel, started picking up Codling and Whiting immediately, couldn't actually leave either rod down at the start as they just started banging away with the little blighters. So approaching 11am and the much anticipated arrival of the girlfriend I got her Rod set up, I thought a float set up would be fun and I couldn't help myself trying it before she arrived, Got 2 small wrasse and a nice shore rockling on the float. Though when Heather arrived I had to change it to a bottom rig as she likes fishing like that  Building a nice bag of fish by now, with double shots of small wrasse coming from a short underarm flick. First real wrasse of note was a fish of around 2lb which I got tight to the North Pier. Heather started with a good Coalfish on the carp rod followed quickly by her first ever Wrasse.

There was a guy fishing my usual spot and he had managed a couple of fish on Mackeral, when he moved I moved down onto my usual spot and all hell broke loose! Spend most of the session helping Heather with her Mini wrasse, But when I got the chance I hammered a couple of real Lunkers on the slope of the North Pier, Including at least 3 fish which were over 2lb. Meanwhile the close up rods were bagging up on the species, with Heather getting more whiting and a couple of nice Corkwings...

Heather went to the chippy and while dangling I managed a couple of gorgeous little Goldsinney and another rockling....

Lunch consisted of a Scampi supper from Davys chip shop (highly recommended) and then Heather had to go.

I stayed for another while with another couple of good Ballans showing from the North Pier, all in all, a great session, and Heather's now on 5 Species since she started fishing!

Absolutely brilliant. How was the sea today? Calm or choppy. Really brilliant weather at the minute.
Great days fishing there. What a day. You must be knackered.

Hey Aaron, It was dead calm, a bit of the pushing tide and all of the high, with some of the drop.
I am knackered mate, X Factor tonight! lol

Was at D'Dee on sunday 18/10/09, only managed one tiny whiting the other two in my group completely blanked. We are all beginners so maybe a lot to do with tactics...

best,
steve.

I'm sure the weather was just lovely!? What state of the tide did you fish? Where were you casting to? A lot of factors to take into account....

Yes the weather was a bit challenging. We were there for about an hour before and 2hrs after high water. I was fishing over the wall near the light house, my mates were off the other side. Baits used were ragworm and mackerel.

If I were to give you 3 tips for fishing the Dee it would probably be:

1: Fish the black railings for best results, you're casting into the man made bottleneck that all the visiting fish have to travel through in order to get in, or out of the harbour.

2: Rough is right, You'll catch as much small stuff as you want in the channel, but if U want a few better fish you'll be wanting to fish tight to the wall of the North Pier ( Up to a couple off meters off is actually better ), You'll get better wrasse here at the minute.

3: Rigs, think 3 Booms, loads of beads and shiney things, and size 1 or 2 Hooks for best results on the Dee, Rag and Mack were very good bait choices for down there, so stick with them.
