Results:20 mackerel six small whiting two scad one ting gurnard
Fished the road bridge at Kinsale, first with krill the odd fish, then fished with a single feather tipped with makerel got 2 scad, swapped to a trace of feathers (supplied by a local man called Billy and friend) who where more than friendly and very helpfull (thankyou) caught loads of makerel and had a great last days fishing before my return to Armagh O btw fished sandycove blank:

If it tasted like mackerel, and had a series of small fins on the lateral line near the tail (very small) it was a scad or horse mackerel.
If it was silvery it could have been a shad, very different and quite rare.
Two species, most common is the twaite shad caught mostly as they run the rivers along the south coast. Far rarer is the allis shad.
My money would be on a scad as they often swim with mackerel shoals...

Scad they where
Thanks for you help, having looked at the species guide they where scad.
I caught them on a flooding tide in the deeper water toward the middle of the bridge, on small bits of mackerel.
