SPECIMEN WRASSE Co, Sligo rock mark 5th October 09

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People:Myself & the Girlfriend

Duration:3.5 HRS

Tide:Filling

Weather:Overcast with light wind

Bait:Limpet & Spinner

Rigs:Single hook flapper

Results:8 Ballan Wrasse & 11 Coalies, 4 Pollack

Report:Monday 5 October

With the weather overcast with light winds the days’ conditions looked perfect for a Wrasse & Pollack session, so got all the gear ready & made our way to a rock mark where I caught my first ever fish a lovely Ballan 2lb weight back in 1988 with my father showing me the ropes. Arrived at the mark & everything looked good so set up, started spinning first to see if there were any mackerel about but only managed one Coalie so on with the Wrasse trace, baited with the old reliable Limpet down along the rock edge.

The bites started straight away hooked a small Ballan around the 1 lb mark, baited up again & bang, something big took the bait & swam towards the kelp like a torpedo but managed to pull it back up then it dived down again & took another five good runs before I managed to land it, my arm was starting to get ache at this stage!, big specimen Ballan Wrasse that tipped the scales at 5lb 6oz, quick photo & off She swam to fight another day. I was over the moon :D and took a wee brake & let the arm recover for a while before I baited up again.
It hadn’t hit the bottom when boom another big Ballan smaller than the first but a mighty hard fighter, got It landed for a quick weigh in & photo, just over 3 lb lovely fish. With the tide filling quickly we moved to another spot & got good few Ballan between us, the girlfriend caught a lovely 3lb Ballan 8) , it went quiet so moved to another mark for a spot of spinning.

Second cast was in to a nice Pollack 54cm long followed by a nice Coalie, then every second or third cast was a Coalie or Pollack & lost about 6 more fish, Caught my smallest Pollack yet a few inches long, hunger was setting in so one last cast & finished the session on a nice wee Pollack best session all year.

Excellent fishing, lovely pix, congrats :D Agree about the limpets, they're my number one bait for wrasse, and mashed up, they make a great general ground bait for a swim feeder. And a lot easier to collect than worms or crab 8)

cracker wrasse mate well done 8) also nice pic's 8)
no one seems to use limpets as much now, a lot of people stick to the usual baits like worm, crab mac; and so on. but the limpets make a great bait, and best of all they are easy to get...
as ole rab c said " see me' see the sea' i love the sea me"
right i'am off for a swally!!!!!!! so were's the F***'n purse!!!!!!!
