Tide: usually around low water
Weather: flat calm bit of surf on the 4th
Bait:lug tipped with mackerel, razor sandeel plugs
Rigs:flappers 3 hook for flatties and running ledger with 3/0 pennel for bass
Results:Lots of flounder and few dogfish
We went as a family to waterville as weather seemed good and had been stuck indoors there for most of the summer. I thought fishing would be good for bass plugging etc with the calm and thought thats what I would be doing. I called into the tackle shop after arriving and Kevin Brain said straight away the bass have gone offfshore. The bay was full of sprat and mackerel and they seemed to be feeding out on them. Well i tried first evening with the plugs regardless and didnt see a fish in a place you usually would! well change of tactics
. On the tue night said I would try for flounder on the beach with one rod and get used to my multiplier with a razor bait for a wandering bass. There wasnt a ripple on the sea except an inch at the shoreline. I fished an hour of the drop and not a tap on either rod once the tide turned it was flounder fest! every cast a flounder in close and even one on the razor out. Now the thing is they were all big thick fellas 35cm to 40cm never caught them consistently like that. I must have had 8 of them and left it at that all returned. The thurs night conditions were the same so i left one rod out for the flatties and wandered a bit with my multiplier trying to get the hang of it and ever hopeful of a kamakazi bass went back after 10 mins and saw my line was way off in the opposite direction reeled inwhat o be honest felt like a full plastic bag had 3 flounder on all about 40cm. 2 were deeply hooked so kept them and they were delicious! put that rod away then didnt wat to catch or damage any more of them. On sat night after a bit of a storm there was a lovely surf on the beaches so was hopeful the bass would be there. I just brought my daiwa 115 and chrome rocket standing in the surf was sure there would be bass not a tap apart from 2 dogfish tried 3 different spots. Spoke to Kevin he said it would need a couple of days of storm to bring them back inshore hwell will get down later in the year for them. All in all an enjoyable few days got used to the reel a bit Thanks Seanie35! and got out and good to see those flounder not used to seeing them that size pat
