Old glove . Leather is good . Haven't tried eg rubber but don't see why not .
Cut from between the fingers up to the wrist , so you've got the finger bit with a couple of straps attached . Sew a loop of elastic to the end of the straps - put your hand thru' this - like a normal glove - it keeps the finger bit on for casting but means you can easily slip it off ( without loosing it ) when you want to .
Alternatively forget the elastic . Just fold the straps under between your palm and the rod handle .

Use the side of the spool not the top of the line to brake the spool. and move the knot to one side of the spool when casting. Try it with out any protector its will become easy. I never use one and i fish with a 525mag
