Cobh 27-09-09

#1 Post by evan699 »

People: Me and cormac

Duration: 2.00pm-9pm

Tide: Started on a dropping tide and fished till low water

Bait: Mack

Rigs: One up one down, and ledger

Result: Me; 2 mackerel, 1 black goby ( my first ), 2 small pollock, lots of small codling, and 3 little whiting. Cormac;2 wee pollack, 1 little whiting, 2 small codling.

Report: Enjoyed the day out but the biggest fish all day were the two mack caught on ledgered mack strips. We were plagued by the codling from the minute we wet the lines. We tried sizing up the bait and hooks to eliminate the smallies but that didn't stop them. We had to rebait every 10 mins and chuck the little fellas off the lines. Hopefully the ammont of codling around is a sign of a good winters fishing ahead, because the little pests are just bait bandits now. They're starting to show up in monkstown aswell but not nearly as many as cobh. Sorry no pics. I find if i leave my camera at home i catch more fish. No one around us was catching much either and there was a fairly wide range of baits being chucked in. A polish lad caught a lobster on rod and reel using bottom fished feathers with frozen shrimp. Only had one claw and he was a bit small so i doubt it'd make good eating.

I fished it a good few times over the past few weeks, the lovely evenings were too much of a temptation!! Had pretty much the same bag as you but the last night I was there I did land 2 conger. One was around the 3 mark and the other was a nice eel around the 10 mark. Both hooked on size 1/0's on a three hook clip down, not exactly the trace you expect to be hooking conger on!!! Deadly scrap off the big fella though lol Id say things are looking good for a bit of winter fishing there as well, a few nice big whitting wouldn't go far wrong either.
Ah yes, 1974, The Cod Wars. I hated Cod so of course I signed up straight away.
