North Clare 24-09

#1 Post by baitdigger »

People:myself

Duration:3hours

Tide:dropping

Weather:overcast W/wind

Bait:feathers/ mackerel

Rigs:6/0 wire trace/ rotten bottom

Results:mackerel- 9lb4oz conger

Report:Armed with a bucket of razor clams I headed out for a West Clare bass mark last night but as so many times this year weed made the mark unfishable so I packed up after an hour. The only reason for mentioning this trip was that I found this little fellow washed up on the shore

Image

He would have weighed about a pound. The gulls had given him a good going over. But they are out there for anyone looking for them.

Got in a short session this morning, mackerel coming within 5 minutes to red and silver flashers. I stopped when I had about a dozen ( some for bait some for a neighbour.)

Had a short run that was dropped on the first cast, second cast produced this

Image

It put up a great scrap and was determined not to be pulled from the rocks and kelp.It seems that the conger are the only feeding fish in North Clare at the moment so its back to the Shannon Saturday for me.

Mick at the Fanore shop must be doing a roaring trade in Rapala gaffs as I found four seperate packagings for them. The future doesnt look great for the conger at Blackhead.

by all accounts some of the marks in the Estuary are being hammered for conger for the table as well.

I managed to get out today for three hours and had a few good bites, had a real slammer but it was snagged up so I waited for about 10 minutes but couldnt feel anything so I had to pull for the break.

It seems to be fishing best on the drop and probably two or three hours in to it. Plenty of mackerel at dawn and dusk irrespective of tide stage.

I did land this, but I didnt bother to weigh it ( not a great picture but it was quite lively and the self-timer makes things awkward. The little white patch in the centre of the picture is a mackerel scale on the lense of the camera.

I did a few night sessions on that bass beach on the week leading upto the spring tide with very little to show. I dug some great lug and fresh sandeels but all we had to show were a few mackerel , whiting and small pollack. I think you would have a much better chance of a bass at your usual mark or the small beach to the left of it.

I did take a nice picture of my mate Joe, that was the only decent thing to come from the two sessionsImage
