Strangford Lough mullet,22-9-09

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:me and ronald

Duration:2.5hrs

Tide:either side of high

Weather:windy,patchy cloud

Bait:erm,bread

Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:haven`t got time for a big report so i`ll put up a short one....

took a half days holiday and headed for the lough to meet ronald who had been out all morning with jonny.
i had a quick chuck at a mark i dont really like fishing until the tide was right for the main mark.
missed one fish at this mark :( i was standin up high and watched it suck my bread in but when i struck i felt weight for a split second then nothing :(

ah well time to move to the main venue and meet ronald who had walked about 6 miles to get there
while i was messing about at the first spot ronald had one mullet of 3lb i think...

i recon there was over 1000 fish at the second mark and they were feedin quite well.not sure how long i waited for my 1st fish but it put up a good scrap and didn`t like the net or ronald.
after 10 mins or so i`d my 1st specimen mullet of the year of 5.55lb 8)
only 15 mins had past and i was in again but to a much smaller fish of 2lb..

the mullet moved away and we had to follow them.my 1st cast once we reached them again and i was in to my 3rd and final fish of the day.a nice wee fish of 3.8lb :D
they all vanished after that and we called it a day..great session :D

It's a lovely fish and long overdue 8)
Jonny ( nifisher )lost a massive fish earlier in the day, easily 6lb prob more, would have been his first ever mullet to :( .
As for the 6 mile walk, interesting in chest waders, but the only way to check out some of the harder to get to coast, plenty of feeding marks on the sand/mud from good mullet.
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

thanks :) maybe you`ll read about the venue in Irish Angler

Like many others on here I read Kieran Hanrahan's article in Irish Angler and cannot see what all the fuss is about. I hardly think that publishing a picture of the Ards Floodgates is likely to encourage an influx of mullet catchers to the area considering the risk it poses to public health. I am an amateur ornothologist and often visit Strangford Lough where apart from the Inler River,Comber have yet to see anyone mullet fishing. As a very accomplished angler in many disciplines of the sport Davy was approached by Irish Angler for local advice on mullet fishing. He gave the advice freely as he would to you or I and has been berated for it by a few greedy anglers who consider Strangford Lough mullet "our fish." We Irish anglers are renowned for our hospitality and should freely offer advice and a "Cead Mile Failte" to our angling visitors.
How about a follow up article on "Strangford Sea Trout Bonanza,"? Now that would be very interesting!

Nice fish Davy ,no wonder you look smug,it's not everyone who can catch several specimen's in one session. LMBO!

Nice going lads, looks like conditions were perfect at the mark. Ronald where was your specimen that day, you are usually the one into the big brutes? Hmm... that 6mile walk would have been very interesting around that part of the coast, I wouldn't have fancied it that's for sure  Davy sure you will get a chance to target the mullet all year, if ya can get them feeding over the winter
