mackie munchin mullaghmore mullet!! 17.9.09

#1 Post by davyp »

People:me

Duration: 2 or 3 hrs

Tide: high bout 6.30

Weather: warm, calm cloudy

Bait: mack, worms

Rigs: flappers and bubble float

Results: some sort of gurnnet, 1 strange little seabird, x2 MULLET :D :D

Report:

hadnt planned to go out, but found an excuse to go to sligo, and squeezed in a sneaky wee session at mullaghmore

got a very small gurnet right at the start - had reelled in from the channel to let a boat pass - and it took right at my feet as soon as the weight hit the bottom - not sure what type - blue and pink.

soon after was talking to some people out for a walk, and got a really serious bite - then this little black and white bird popped out of the water in front of me with a hook in its beak - another new species on the earthworms!!! with a bit of help managed to get him out and unhooked, and he flew away no bother.

the odd bite but nothing happening until i noticed that the head and spine of a mack i had chucked in seemed to be moving    a closer look revealed a very big mullet nosing it about .

I chopped some mushy frozen mack into tiny pieces and pretty soon ther were 4 or 5 feeding like mad, i got small bubble float and the smallest hook i could find, with a small cube of mack - they were on it like a shot, sucking it in and spitting it out - then one hooked himself - what a buzz! -- i can see how people get hooked on mullet fisihn - great fight.

when landed it was bleedin a bit but unhooked and away OK.

was surprised to see that the fight hadnt spooked the others, and five or ten minute later i was into another one - bit bigger this time, and another class fight - I 'walked' the fish along the breakwater to the pontoon to land, and another fish followed it over - right by its side - and stayed wth it - even with me standin there - mad.

had another go and the were grabbing the mack and swimming with it - but no more hook ups and it was getting dark

typical of fishin that all the times i targetted mullet i never managed it, but was really chuffed to get my first - the second was the icing on the cake!!

best spell of fishin i have had in ages!! - next time i'm bringin the fly rod!!!
