i'm new to fishing.

i did a bit in australia before and loved it so this year decided to give it a go in ireland. i'm still at the stage that i'm happy to catch anything. a few weeks ago i was fishing in arklow with a friend and we caught these. as i said we're new so all we know is that they are fish. can you tell me wat they are?

Hello Boris and welcome.
I don't know why I'm attempting to identify as it will show my ignorance more clearly than anything, anyway my guess in descending order is
Coalfish
Poor Cod
Plaice or more probably Flounder (a flounder feels rough if you rub your finger along the back from tail to front I think)
Pouting
?
?
Herring
Pollack

I'm open to correction.

It was a good haul of species in anyone book

thank you it was a good session we got bout 25 fish between us, and a big one that got away when my line snapped pulling it out of the water.

oh and are any of them dangerous?

nice goin boris and welcome to the site

main fish to watch out for is the weever - 3 spines on its back - give a god awfull sting by all acounts, common on west coast beaches, but dont seem to hear of them as much on the east coast

you dont want to get stun by one of these guys :twisted: one got me a few years ago and i ended up in hospital, was an awful experience.

We get our fair share on the east coast too, but once your carefull you wont have any problems.

As bigsod said, plenty on the east coast beaches during summer/autumn, be careful they can look like whiting at first glance.

got a few of them 2 weeks ago in brittas bay. as bigsod said just be careful with them.
