Hi Guys
I have recently become aware of 'shockleaders' and I understand they are quite important ?
Could someone talk me through how I set up a 'shockleader' e.g. if I have a 15lb bs line what bs should the SL be and how long ?
If I have the SL and I attach a leader to it with a lure on the end what should the bs of the lure leader be relative to the SL and the main line ????
I currently have STREN line and I don't like it. It seems to tie itself in an awful lot of wind knots and birds nests. Can you recommend any line that is less prone to this ?
Thanks for all advice

Re: Lines and shockleaders ?
the leader should be 10lb bs for every oz of lead your casting plus another 10. if your casting 4oz leads then use 50lb shockleader.
it should be the length of your rod PLUS about 7turns of the spool.
the line i usually use is 15lb ultima distance in yellow so i can see it at night. everybody has a different point of view where the line is concerned. some will say one is good but others wont like it. i use the ultima cos it works for me.
the knot i use is the allbright knot, again cos it works for me but others might reccommend a different one.
heres the link i used to learn the knot.

What about the length of line that attaches to the shockleader and has the lure on the end ? I don't know whether you call this the 'cast' 'trace' or 'leader' but should it be the same as or heavier than the shockleader ?

Re: Lines and shockleaders ?
Thats great info, Ive been neglecting to use shock leaders correctly myself for some time and have thrown many a trace and weight into the sea.

you do not need a shockleader for lures in general,as they would not be heavy enought to cause a break off,15lb line would be strong enough to cast out up to 1 1/2 oz, most lures would be lighter than this, its when you start using heavier weights that you need a shockleader. If your reel came with a spare spool, then add shockleader to one for bait fishing with weights, and just have 15lb line on the other for lure fishing, you can then put the spool that suits the style of fishing on before you go out,or just carry both in your bag.

Sound bit of advice there. Only recently have I used shockleaders, it is definitely a good idea to do so when casting a 3,4,5oz etc lead. Even if your like me and can't hit the horizon with a cast, it is definitely the safest way to go. Use a shock leader even if using heavy braid on your spool, the slightest nick in the line will cause a snap off, plus will act as a rubbing leader and will save that expensive braid from damaging (well in theory).

forgot to answer that one, like the lads said theres no need for it if its a lure or a very light lead. might be worth putting on a few feet of clear mono or fluro before the lure if your using red/yellow for the mainline tho.
