sligo beach mark, 10.9.09

#1 Post by davyp »

People:me

Duration: 5 - 9.00pm

Tide:lw@4.00ish

Weather: the summer we never had

Bait: frozen mack, earthworms, later fresh mack :D and 2 sandeels

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: turbot x2, seatrout x2, lesser weeverx2, one big fat mack.

decided on a change of scenery, and with some good reports from sligo comin in, i decided to return to one of my old haunts and see if i could pick up a few flatties, fished two rods - one with a gripper which i chucked out and left, the other was a light spinning rod with a 3 hook flapper an 3oz weight, i would chuck this out and slowly retrieve - a few winds of the reel, then leave it a wee while - then a few more, find it works really well to find out what sort of range any flatties are hangin about. tried the earthworms again - just to see and they drew first blood - wee turbot bout 23cm had took the worms on the middle hook of the flapper :D :D ,

in realy close i kept getting very small nibbles - eventually hooked up - feckin weever bout 3 inches long on mack - i really hate catchin these.

got a good bite an had something small but lively on, lost him right at the edge, but saw a flash of silver and reckoned seatrout.

baited up and out again, and straight into a very lively fish - reckoned i had a crackin seatrout, but it was a big fat mack - best fight of the day and nicely timed as my frozen mack was crap - and gues what he took ? feckin earthworms!!,

had the two sea trout in quick succession on the fresh mack both about 3/4lb ish - and very heavily sea liced, one was kind enough to regurgitate two sandeels as i was unhooking him. which quickly found there way onto a hook

had another bigger weever, and then things went quiet - fished for another hour an half maybe a bit more and got another turbot, slightly smaller an just scraping 20 cm, this one on mack, gave another 1/2 hr or so til dark set in, and called it quits,

cracking wee session, and nice to catch on the worms - handy emergency bait

You have to be happy when you catch a Sea trout as for Earthworms every time I went out to the garden to get them I blanked  the same with my daughters garden ,they are worse than the Mackerel this year., so much for Fairy liquid

cheers for all the replies lads

the earthworms are definitly handy - esp as you can keep them for months in a tub of soil, i put 3 or 4 threaded on a hook, same as when fishin for salmon.

funny with the sea trout - generally i find that when they are jumpin they arent feedin and they drive you nuts by bouncing around in front of you.

Mike - I dont think it was where i think you think it was    will send ya a PM - never fished mullaghmore - really must give it a go - when do ya reckon it fishes best?
