Report:
Day 1: Arriving at the rental home at 7, we threw our clothes through the door and headed down to Beenbane to try to catch a few mackerel for conger fishing that night. 1 hour later, we had enough bait so set ourselves up on the marina as it got dark. There was literally a run every 10 mins, but most of the fish were small and weren't swallowing the hook. However, we did manage 3 fish to 12lbs.
Day 2: Woke up to heavy rain and Westerly winds. We went to fish in the relative shelter of Dun an Oir but 3 fishless hours later we decided on a change of scenery so went to Scraggane Pier (We didn't want to be too far away from the car with the weather conditions!). Lots of small wrasse here, but we missed the top of the tide, so the larger fish were gone. Then did a bit of plugging around the Castlegregory area into the night but not a sign of bass and the water was full of loose weed.
Day 3: Weather was worse than the day before, so we decided to catch the top of the tide at Scraggane pier. Lots of small wrasse again and a few bigger ones to liven things up
The weather was clearing so we headed down to Castlegregory again for more plugging, but blanked again!
Day 4: The wind had died down considerably, so we took this chance to have a trip to Dingle lighthouse. Mackerel weren't a problem and we soon had enough bait for a day of ray fishing. The ray were very obliging and you rarely had to wait more than 10 or 15 mins for a run. Biggest of the day was around the 8lb mark.
Day 5: We wanted to fish for pollock off the cliffs at Ventry, so decided to plug our way to the rocks for bass and do the same on the way back that evening. On the way down I caught one and then we spent the next 3 hours catching a decent stamp of pollock. The way back to the car was the best session of the week with the 2 of us catching 13 bass! By the time it got dark it was a fish every second cast!
Day 6: After the previous days fishing, we wanted to try the same again. No bass on the way down and unbelievably, no pollock after 3 hours of trying, but we caught 4 bass on the way back and a small sea-trout.
Can't wait to get back down!
