Would you use a multiplier reel with a spinning rod, for lure's and short range off rocks for wrasse etc. Or do you use a fixed spool.
What reel would you recommend for long range casting on beaches and rocks etc, a fixed or a multiplier.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Reels
hey aaron, be personally i would use a multi for long range fishin like a penn 525mag extra or an abu chrome rocket. for close range a fixed spool every time for that i would use a shimano ultegra or diawa emcast 5000. i would sometimes use my slosh20hv on my diawa regal spinning rod for wrasse but thats the only time i would, but then again i don't see a prob using a multi on a spinning rod for close range rock fishing.
cheers jonny

Re: Reels
Hey mate,
Personally i stick to fixed spool reels for lures and close range work. They are a lot less hassel. I love to fish for wrasse using a spinning rod or carp rod as i like to fish light and i dont see any advantage in using a multiplier reel with these.
I use ABU 6500 C3 CT and Daiwa 7HT reels for long range fishing but if you aren'y experienced with multipliers you can get fixed spool reels that will allow you to cast similar distances. Look for something with a long coned spool.
These smaller multipliers can suffer if used in really weedy areas as i can testify. It's very easy to strip the pinion gear in them so you would need somthing a bit beefier like a 7000 or a SLOSH.
If you need distance then get somone that knows to teach you to cast properly as it really does come down to technic.
Hope this is some help

Re: Reels
hi aaron. we use fixed spool reels for everything except congers. initially it was because of jordans young age and i did'nt want to spend most of our trips sorting out bird's nests, but recently with fixed spool design you should be able to nail one to the horizon without too much hassle at all. i have had some skippers give me a funny look when fishing big baits on the bottom in strong tides with 2lb of lead on the end of a rig attached to a fixed spool reel
but our okuma ez 90 reels have never let us down. even landed my 14lb blonde ray from 200ft below the boat in a flowing tide on it. but i think it's all down to just what you feel comfortable with yourself man
if you can get on with the multi, there are some cracking reels out there for reasonable money. but if not, don't feel like you are settleing for second best with the fixed spool as they will do the buisness too. like a few of the lads have already said, it's as much to do with your casting as it is to do with your reel
hope this helps man

Re: Reels
You can use a multiplier with a spinning rod no problem I do it my self I would use a 9ft spinning rod an a Abu 5000c I would use it for spinning for pollack macks ect no problem it also gives you plenty of practice using a multi as you will cast a lot more than you would when beach fishing. But as has been said its all down to your own personal choice and what ever works best for you.

Re: Reels
Thanks again lads.
So really i should get better at me casting, and forget about a multiplier till i can cast pretty good with the fixed.
