Co. Sligo, 22/08/09 - 03/09/09

#1 Post by MacD »

Duration: 22/08/09 - 03/09/09 (6 or so sessions)

Tide: on the flood generally

Weather: Mostly wet and windy

Bait:Lures / sandeel

Rigs:Lures / 3 hook paternoster

Results:2 x sea trout, half dozen pollack, 2 x dogfish

Report:Fished a number of marks with the lures during my hols. Managed to land two sea-trout, one of them off the top. They weren't big by any means but great scrappers. A fair few sea lice on the first one:

Did consider picking them all off but thought it better to get her quickly back into the water after the photo. Over the sessions I hooked and lost four more trout after some brief surface acrobatics. To be fair I had barbless trebles but any tips on how to tame their aerial displays and up the landing success rate would be appreciated.

Tried for the pollack right around the head at Augrhis on an evening tide with soft baits and plugs but drew a blank in pretty rough conditions. Looked like someone had set the sea on spin cycle. Got half a dozen small ones at some other spots in my second week including this one off Dunmoran Strand:

Gave the bait fishing a go on the east side of Aughris after deciding it would be hard work at Trawee when I saw the size of the surf. Picked up two doggies on sandeel, one of which puked it's last few meals down my jacket:

Interesting experience but not something I'd recommend - serves me right for holding him by the tail. The sunny conditions in the photo were a one-off before more heavy showers! Saw 4 or so other people come and go further along from me. As sadly seems to be the norm after my last visit to this mark, they left a load of rubbish that I picked up on my way back to the pier.

Was all enjoyable despite some tough conditions. Thanks must go to the guy in JJ's tackle in Ballysadare for sorting me with a repair kit for my waders gratis after they sprung a leak. The shop's further down towards the bridge from where Mac's tackle used to be and is off the main street. He has a good selection of lure/game gear and baits.

Hope the high pressure forecast later this week improves the fishing in the north west. Tight lines all.

Thanks for the comments all. Sure the weather was a bit frustrating at times but got to take the rough with the smooth. Doesn't seem to be stopping you guys getting some good catches in the area though.

Aaron - Would think the dogfish puking is their natural response to an akward meal that won't go down (lively crab or something). Doesn't work so well when their hooked in the scissors but it's a good way of getting one back on the angler

Zeke - Yeah, those new plugs passed the test but to be honest all the other hook-ups were on more reasonably priced ones. Lesson learnt
