pollack fishing over wrecks

could anyone give me some advice on pollack fishing around wrecks, are lures best, or is bait best, what tackle or baits are best.

i found useing baited feathers great for pollock white cod feathers with either fresh mackeral or squid. rag is also good
i found that they get the lug off the hooks to easily and small whiting will strip lug in seconds before you get near a good
pollock try this

Dan i think it depends what depth u are fishing bait or perks for deep wrecks
and rag jelly eles and belly strips for shallow wrecks say under 200 ft

i would use jelly eels, shads,storm eels,and pirks as lures over wrecks,belly strip of mackerel on a long trace as bait,but baited feathers work well too.but you will get lots of species on and over a wreck,ling,codling,conger,coalies,etc so its worth trying different lures and baits and tactics to catch them

It all depends what you want Dan, I would definitely agree that Rag on a flowing trace will out fish anything else, but the size of fish wont be great, up to maybe 6lb. While shads, redgills, whole small mack, or mack flappers will take bigger fish. Even jumbo hookais will account for fewer, but bigger fish.

In deep water wrecks you can increase the length of the flowing trace. shorten it on the shallower reefs.

In deep water count the turns on your reel. when you find the fish are feeding at say 30 turns don't bother going more than 5 or 10 turns passed this if you don't get a hit , there's no point in gilling for 200 turns if the fish are only feeding up to 35. In shallower water gill the whole way to the top.( I've had pollack hit worm on top of the water)

Adjust your retrieve speed if your not getting hits. I tend to start very slow and if after a few drops I find this not working then I slightly increase the rate the next time. There are some schools of thought that shads should be worked faster that jelly worms. what ever works on the day.

If you see somebody on the boat take a few fish to a certain colour and your not getting hits switch on to that colour on the next steam back over the wreck.

When your steaming over the wreck you need to be ready. when the skipper calls lines down you should have the lead hitting the water. theres no point standing in the wheelhouse because by the time you get your lead down you'll already be half off the wreck.

Rag and mack will out fish artifical . Jellys and shads produce bigger, better quality fish. Don't be suprised when gilling rag if you land a big wrasse they will swim up for baits at times.
