lobsterpots and the dangers

#1 Post by twinkle »

lads got out tonight at about 7.30 just to give the boat arun havent been out for a week headed towards irelands eye there is a load of new pots to the left coming out of the harbour so set about avoiding them i steered a course that i thought would be safe as i was going through passing the bouy at about 20 ft the boat got pulled back rope from the pots caught around the prop i killed the engine and lifted the engine there was about 30ft of slack rope off the bouy after catching the engine just stupid brand new prop lump gone out of it this rope was just floating under the water attached to the bouy so i promtly took out my knife and cut this rope this is the first time this has happened to me but is this the norm
do lobstermen normally leave rope like that or is this a one off

I doubt the rope would take a chunk out of the prop, that may have already been done and the rope brought your attention to it

Most potters use lead line on the buoy lines and leaded ropes to sink them but there are still a lot of cheapskates out there that use the cheapest of polypropylene rope

one or two marks around arklow with similar potters
seriously bad ethics when it comes to awareness of others!
even the swimmers are more concerned with the pots/floats than with anglers!!
you all know about fishing with crash-helmets but swimming with them
the sea belongs to us all!
mind you that's another issue!

it wasent the potters it was the guys who tied off maybe they thought they were going back to that spot and untied off there bow but forgot about there rope that made sense to me because there was no other reason for the rope to be left there on the buay
