I have been on and off the forum for a while now as merely a spectator! So just decided to join there this morning.
I mainly fish in greenore, co. Louth as im from dundalk, but more recently with work i am in south county dublin alot and have been looking for decent rock fishing areas or anywhere really that is worth going to throw a few lines out. I mainly use feathers, but more recently i have been using maria spinners looking for some sea trout - although to no avail yet! I went out to dalkey last night to a quiet little pier and it was useless - wind/current quite strong and hard to get a decent cast to let it sink. So really all i want to know, is there any more plentifull spots for shore fishing?
looking forward to your replies!
Conor

yes, i am aware, but they will be thrown back in..
Welcome to the forum.....and before anyone else jumps in to say it - you still need a licence to fish for sea-trout, regardless of whether you intend to return them or kill them.

the best way is to try any good looking ( safe ) rock marks, or piers. keep banging away at differant spots and at each stage of the tide untill you hit them, you should get some info; from the shore angling reports from around your area, and welcome to the site conor..
as ole rab c said " see me' see the sea' i love the sea me"

Welcome to the site. I presume you were at Collimore Harbour last night? The current can be a nightmare. It's ok on a calm night and I've had some good fish there. Better for bait fishing.
If you wanted to spin for pollock you could try the rocks at the back of Bulloch Harbour. The rocks at Sorrento point can be good for macs on the right evening and not bad for small pollock, dabs etc with bait.
Bray Harbour can be good at night. Wicklow harbour is only a short drive down the coast and can be interesting although it smells worse than the jacks below the old west stand in Lansdowne Road.
The beaches can be hit and miss but you could do worse than try a jellyworm on a leadhead on the Rocky side of Whiterock Beach. If you fish there early in the morning I would suggest fishing in the nip as you will fit in better. On second thougts, leave the jellyworm in your back for risk of offending them.
Just back from coliemore, once again, and i lost 3 sets of feathers and one spinner. Caught nothing! disaster - this is what its all about though. Ok, Bait fishing, have heard alot about, but would not have the foggiest of how to rig a line etc. i have some dogfish lures, but i understand you need to attach some form of bait to these? what is best to use? where to get it? mackerel? (gota catch it first!!) im afraid i only know how to use spinners and feathers..apologies for the lack of knowledge..
i might head to bray harbour next... hmmmmm
thanks for the helpfull replies lads!

i would start with a two hook flapper,(bought in any tackle shop) also buy frozen mack, sandeel, lug, find a good mark put some of your bait on the hooks add your weight and cast out.now you have to make a decision where you fish,if you fish over sand, say from a beach, you will need to get distance to catch fish,if you fish a rock mark, have a few sets of flappers cause you will prob, lose a rig or two,the easiest place for you to fish, starting out, would be a pier that has a sandy bottom.fish it over high tide and you would have a good chance of a few fish.(tide booklets can be got in your local tackle shop). This is a very simple discription of bait fishing, but you will learn as you go along, and it would help if you could find a fishing buddy who could show you a few tips. good luck.

stopped in viking tackle on my way home today - and got some rag for the first time - eek bit tricky for the first time! haha. lets just say dont bring a girl with you when you have rag!! haha she was not imoressed, but the fish were! headed out to colliemore and caught a nice sized dog! was delighted - first fish other than a mackerel, put him safely back in the water - much to the disgust of the two polish guys beside me! oh well! cant imagine them being too tasty!?
