North wexford beach, 29-08-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me and Neil

Duration:7-30pm-11pm

Tide:falling

Weather:mild evening, slight westerly breeze turning southerly

Bait:lug, squid, peeler crab

Rigs:single hook clipped down, 2 hook bombers

Results:dabs, doggies and smoothies

Report:Met Neil at Jack Whites and followed his little red car down motorways and country lanes till we got to our location. It was a lovely mild evening with a fairly flat sea and a slight offshore breeze. There were a few other anglers setting up when we arrived and when some more arrived a while later Neil said that maybe theyve heard something about this beach. I started off with a nice plump dab, followed by another before Neil got in on the act with a dab of his own,
Then the doggies arrived and i landed my first one in a while, a nice big fellow. Not to be outdone, Neil landed one shortly after.Neils rod then bent over and he lifted into a lovely smoothound which was landed , photographed and released   .To say i was envious would be an understatement  , Neil had been using fresh peeler and gets much more distance than me with his casts  , but i sent out a single hook 2/0 loaded with 3 or 4 lug tipped off with squid and hoped for the best. The next bit is a bit of a blur   ,, but i remember my rod and stand hitting the sand and me grabbing my rod and feeling something pulling like i've never felt before ( no funny comments please   )."Thats a smoothie", said Neil, and proceeded to give me advice as i struggled to beach it. Twice i had to give it line as it tugged and pulled to get away. All i could think of was the rig, which i had tied earlier in the day, and would the knots and hook hold. Well they did and after a struggle i landed it with the help of the incoming waves. Me legs went like jelly and i got a strange look on my face as Neil took a piccie of me with my first decent smoothound, starry i think  You definitely know that theyre on the end of the line   . Neil landed another one a while later ,while i got some more doggies and dabs, but i couldnt care less, i spent the rest of the night reliving catching the smoothie 8) 8) . We packed up at 11pm after a great evenings fishing, with me getting 6 doggies, 4 dabs and a smoothie with Neil getting 2 smoothies and similar doggies and dabs.

ps it was great to catch the fish on lug that i'd dug meself that day,and with a bad knee too

Thanks Conor, i had my headlamp switched off all night, cos i was fed up checking to see if it was on or off   ,, his was so bright mine made no difference. I was also dazzled, which accounts for the strange contorted look on me bit and brace  :lol:But if you think that lamp is bright, you should see his new one
