43rd Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival

#1 Post by Pat »

Hi all,

If you're contemplating an angling break in 2009 why not consider the Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival. This festival is held over 5 days in the first week in Sept with 4 competitive days and 1 fun day out. Fishing is both within and outside Cork Harbour and, as you will have noted from various posts on this forum, the standard and variety of fishing is quite exceptional.

Cobh SAC are hosting the annual International Deep Sea Angling Festival in Cobh and this will be the 43rd year that we have hosted such an event. I’ve attached our current brochure and entry form for those of you who may be interested.

This is an ideal fishing break which combines competitive angling with great craic. There is a very strong international flavour with anglers and teams coming from Holland, Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, and Wales. Many of these anglers have been coming back year after year.

The craic and banter during the week is excellent and the fishing, as noted above, is also excellent, no matter what weather conditions prevail. By way of example, last August we hosted the EFSA European Line Class & Boat Championships. On the first day the weather was atrocious with driving rain and high winds. Despite this, though, all competitors were able to fish in comfort in the confines of Cork Harbour. Not only that, but the fishing was quite good. There were 1,026 fish landed between 180 anglers with a total of 17 different species. Now that’s impressive! Over the next four days the weather allowed fishing over the many famous reefs outside the Harbour. A further 5,687 fish were landed and a further 6 species were recorded. Many of these were good quality conger, ling, pollack, etc.,… In amongst that were also 58 cod, many of a good size.

With fishing like this it would be well worth your while to book a place for yourself, or for a group of you to fish as a team. Rest assured you will have a week that you won’t forget and I’m quite sure that the competition will become a regular feature of your fixtures list. Closing date for entries will be 1st August 2009.

This is one of the most enjoyable events in the Irish sea angling calendar, Just to add to Pats description above the competition is fished on a fleet of modern fast all "P5" licensed and insured charter boats. This event can be fished competitively or just for fun, novice anglers would be made very welcome by all anglers. The banter & craic is most enjoyable ashore each night where usually the stories or lies about the days fishing grow bigger as the night goes on

The same rules as for the Festival proper will apply. The main rule is that the onboard steward will weigh the fish caught by the Angler, ten points will be awarded per Kilogram of fish weighed, with five points per fish recorded. The rules are listed on the Brochure (link above).

The Festival is starting this Monday coming, with a reception on Sunday night. This is an on-line reminder to all Cobh Sea Angling members that the opening reception is on at 8pm this Sunday at the Commodore Hotel. Your presence is required :!:

I'm glad to report that, despite the current recession, the number of entries are on a par with last year. We have anglers coming from the UK and continental Europe, aswell as a strong Irish & local contingent. So here's looking forward to the craic and banter......and, oh, the fishing aswell  .

What time are the boats due back in in the evenings?

Ye'll be grand if this happens:

Jim,
The boats have to be back at the pier by 18:00pm. Most get back around 17:45pm. That weather map doesn't look too bad. Initial indications are that Tues will be fine, but Monday the breeze may get upto F5 southerely. However, even with that we should get onto the outside reefs....although, it might be a bit lumpy for some  . Too earlier to see what the rest of the week will bring :? .

Although, we rarely catch cod of this size, this fish, caught on a previous club competition, gives you an idea of the stamp of fish that can be caught.
