penn 525 supermag???

have been usin it for a while now. great to have the extra breaking for big bait lobbing and rough ground stuff. took it out for a test drive today on a clean beach into a strong headwind. casting with breaks on full i slowly backed them off from eigtht all the way down to three. found the reel was still running very slow, cutting distance dramatically. never got the chance to try less breaking(had to head home!). anyoneone else find it a little slow??? i have red rocket fuel in the bearings. just seems like it'll still be slow when it reaches zero?! lighter bearing fluid may be needed?

The supermag comes with red rocket fuel already in the bearings. This would suit the majority of casters as it helps to slow the reel down. I'd suggest that you should use yellow rocket fuel Mark, as your casting style means you can use a quicker reel without risking birdies the whole time.

I have both the orginal and the super. The super is a hell of lot slower and virtually impossible to birds nest. You may even find that changing the oil is still to slow. My casting is only ok, but I can't go below 5 on the orginal without risking problems, where I can go chance the whole way on the super. However I get an extra 20 yards with the orginal and tend to keep the super for those head winds on open beaches at night.

The yellow rocket fuel is a decent idea but its important to note that the yellow is for tournament casting and it quickly runs back out of the bearings after only two or three casts! The lads on the casting field regularly top up during casting sessions.

I have two of them and have to say they are excellent reels, my suggestion to you is to remove two of the magnets from the left hand side plate, it makes a huge difference and you still will have difficulties bird nesting!!

I have two of the originals and love em. I upgraded the bearings two years ago to ceramics and treat them with red rocket fuel.

My mate recently bought a supemag and it's very very slow. I think the main differences between the two reels are upgraded bearings and extra mags in the super.

I've found the originals to be very very quick but I've never had problems with them overrunning/casting into a headwind etc. with the mags fully wound down.

My advice would be to stick to the red rocket fuel but remove the extra magnets from the super.

thanks lads. have been using the standard 525's for a while now and they are fine. never had trouble with them once i got used to them. i was actually surprised they brought out a new model? i'll have a ponder as to what to do next. i don't like the idea of removing the magnets but what can you do- the reels too slow!!??

Is their end float on the spool when out of gear ? make sure the end screw is not tight up ,

no it's not tight up Warjoe. just a little of the required lateral movement.

you should be interested in Septembers Sea Angler magazine as there is an article about the 525 supermag and how to dismantle it. Haven't read it yet but it's by John Holden so bound to be of interest.

cheers Scara i got it. have yet to read that article though. didn't think much of this months edition or it's brothers. pretty bland stuff and no rigs. lets hope next months dvd makes up for it!

It sounds to me like you are being a bit of fairy....you need to speed up and chuck it harder then you should find no matter what colour your rocket is you can blow the bugger up !

Bloody good reels though

I tried the supermag no joy with the casting I would prefer the old version and I found out that over doing it in the tuning is a disaster for birds nests I only tune my reels a few times a year and they run well for me.

The older version is much better I only use two magnets on the original and can cast with the reel set to zero another thing is when using a large bait or flapper rig just lob it out but clip them down when casting any distance as a few people I met with problems with casting a multiplyer were thumping out large baits and flappers with no clips @@@@@@@@.............

Robert,

I definitely do not agree that yellow is for tournament casting only.

It's a standard oil for slower reels, and very commonly used on the beach, being that bit thinner than red RF.

I think you'll find that of the Rocket Fuels, the "Tournament" oil is the one that will be used in competitions.

There's some good tuning tips on the website below, although there's no mention of the Super Mag yet.
