Black Head Saturday 22-AUG-2009

Black Head area ; just after the first proper rock mark after Ballyvaughan
18:00 - 19:30
rig - 9' spinning rod, 6k line, silver and blue tobies
Results: 4 Mackerel, 5 Coalies

With the weather not looking too bad, packed the missus, kid + dog + brother into the car and went for a drive to Ballyvaughan from Limerick. Took a left at BV to head up towards Fanore, tide was just hitting high mark as we left BV. The first rock mark outside of BV (just before you come around the corner of black head) was packed with anglers, some mackie bashers but some serious tripods in action as well. Much envy for the clever guy who had a little dinghy floating just off the rocks, awesome way to avoid the slippery rocks!

As I just so happened (heh heh) to have the rod in the car, I decided to stop just beyond this mark and have a go, wind was blowing offshore so lovely and calm. The instant I got out of the car it started to rain. Like that ever stopped us...Myself and bro went down and spun for an hour and a half, managed to hit the edge of a shoal of mackerel, lost some fish as we were flaking these light lures out way to far! Then managed to land a couple. Then hit a small shoal of small coalies, lovely little fish about 1/2 a pound each - not much sport but nice to see them. With the rain hammering down and the wife thoroughly bored, packed it in and went home to have a nice grilled mackerel for tea.

sorry no photos but we've all seen plenty of medium sized mackerel before!!

The strangest thing was, myself and the brother were standing about 3 yards apart; and I was catching mackerel and he coalfish. Then halfway through it switched and he got the mackerel! Must have been literally the very fringe of the shoal...oddly enough, although I could see plenty of lads down the shore, nobody else seemed to be catching anything. And no sign of the mackerel on the surface either. So I think the weather has really split up the shoals. Shame, here's hoping we get a couple of good weeks when the brats go back to school, for them to regroup!
