berthra and roonagh pier

#1 Post by taz »

People: myself and John

Duration:7am to 7 pm

Tide:high at 9am

Weather:mist,rain sunshine windy calm

Bait:frozen mack , fresh lug rag crab fresh mack and a live pollock

Rigs: feathers wedges and array of dead bait rigs

Results:2 hungry tired men going home to have fozen fish fingers
berthra 1 mack each and i caught a tiny pollock
roonagh a number of doggies each and i had 1 small wrasse and 3 pollock biggest 1 lb

Report:
myself and john left swinford at 5.30am nice and early to collect some bait en-route dug aload of lug and some rag.WE got to berthra just after 6 and started the long long long walk with thoughts of how the hell are we going to manage the walk back with the all mackeral we were going to catch  thankfully that wasn't going to be a problem.
we set up 1 rod each with mack and lug and went spinning for mackeral
after 1 hour i land a mack so thankfully blank saved for me 1 hours later john had a mack 2 hours later i caught a small pollock on lug with a great personallity so i put a hook through him and casted him out towards westport and watched as my line got taken back out past me by the current . (there is a mental powerful current here )
on the cast of pollock stuuffed with frozen mack got a mental tug and a almighty rattle . i thought to myself woohooo i got something decent and after a quick strugglemy line went loose reeled in to find that something had taken a wee bite out my pollock hust leaving his head spine and tails at this point it started to get a bit packed people were casting over lines and there was no comfort so we headed off at 1300 for a new spot hoping for elusive mackeral.
we stopped at roonagh pier and set up rigs with mack and lug after a hour or so my rod rattling and my bait being stripped i wrapped my bait up with loads of bait elastic and bang john landed a nice doggie and then another one
. then i landed a small wrasse it had a crap personallity so i just throw it back then had a couple of doggies on mack the two fresh mack being used up with nothing left for the pot i went spinning and caught some small pollock and a nice lb one that fought well throw him back and had to make room for the mack basher who were taken over the place casting everywhere and anywhere John got hit in the hand with a piece of lead a by one so we decide to head home and while we still in tack

a greta wee 12 hours session unfortunately with nothing to show for the pot

Don't those ferries drive you mad at Roonagh??
They are non stop all day long, trying to outdo each other.
God knows much much diesel they burn up in a day?
Oh for a torpedo!!

Did you lose any gear at Roonagh?
There's so much inadequate tackle used there, I dread to think how much line and hooks are out there on the snags??
