greystones rocks, 17-08-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:7-30pm-10pm

Tide:rising

Weather:lovely and calm

Bait:lug, mack

Rigs:mini rigs and flappers

Results:wrasse, codling, whiting, blennies, coalies ,and 1 mack

Report:Went to Greystones rocks to use up leftover lug from Sunday , always a good excuse. One lad there when i arrived, fishing baited mack feathers. I set up at my spot and dropped down to get a couple of coalies and some blennies straight away, plenty of bites and i knew it was going to one of the better nights  . Some other young guys arrived and set up beside me, and I had a good bit of craic with them. I was getting a fish, or two even, on most casts, the hardest part was getting the lug onto the small hooks without bursting them. The first lad still hadnt caught anything, but kept looking at me wondering where he was going wrong   . He wasnt the friendliest but i was going to offer him some lug and some advice as i knew his hooks were too big and baited with huge lumps of mack, but then i saw him bashing in a crab with the butt of his rod    . "What do you get out of that ?", i asked him, and the reply was that "He wont get any more of my bait" . I told him there was a couple of thousand others out there and how pointless it was to kill one but he wasnt having any of it. He muttered something in my direction which i didnt catch , but there was an atmosphere there after that  . When he left later on, after catching a tiny dab, the other lads told me i shouldnt have said anything, that he could have been a dangerous so and so. I told them that i couldnt stand idly by and let a crab be harmed and besides if i felt i was in any danger i would curl up in the foetal position and wait for him to tire himself out   . He was one of our own ethnic minority . With him gone and no sign of any Hi-ace vans arriving, i could relax and get back to fishing. On the distance rod i had a bite from a codling, then the other hook was grabbed by a mack on the way in , a rare catch this year for me   . This session has brought me over the 1000 mark for the year, i'd never have believed it 2 yrs ago when i started out, and a few of them have even been over the 20cm mark   . With darkness came the rats, so i rang the missus to come and rescue me, and happy days had a double on the last cast.

ps, i didnt catch that skate in the mack picture, it was just in the paper

way to go dave, another productive session :P . saw a guy crush every crab he reeled in at donaghadee one night. he used the heel of his boot to mush them up and kick them over the edge of the harbour into the sea :| :| :| :| . i was a bit puzzled and asked him why he was doing it. he reckoned it was great groundbaiting. but seeing as he was casting 30 foot out in front of him i could'nt see how it was helping him :? :? :? :? i guess some people just like to kill things   we'll have to get you and neil up this neck of the woods sometime. we could take you to our huss and mini marks for a bit of sport  all good craic 8)
