tue 18th august 09 fanad head below the lighthouse and fahan

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me jordan and dawsey (joined by fishermannum1 at fahan)

Duration: fanad head 1pm - 6pm. fahan 7.30pm - 1.30am

Tide: various

Weather: dry, sunny and calm

Bait: mack, squid, sand eel and lug

Rigs: lures, feathers, 3 hook flappers and single hook rough ground rigs

Results: FANAD HEAD: jordan= 1 pollack me= 1 ballan wrasse 1lb 13ozs dawsey= 1 pollack FAHAN: jordan= 1 doggie me= 6 dogs and 1 dab dawsey= 10 dogs and a flounder fishermannum1= couple of dogs

Report[/b]: we arrived at fanad head and decided to fish the gully to the left of the lighthouse as 3 guys were making their way to our intented spot at the steps to the right of the lighthouse  we had a bit of a chuckle at their efforts to put us off by telling us that you had to have expressed permission to fish there like they supposedly had      . if you're reading this guys i gotta say nice effort at a pathetic attempt to put us off   . the truth of the matter is that that spot is only big enough for about 3 people to fish, so they just did'nt want us there   . but we would'nt be that inconsiderate any how    . the fishing was oddly slow with only 3 fish taken while we were there :| . jordan (as usual) was first off the mark with a tiny pollack on feathers and dawsey was next with his first ever toby caught pollack and i got a nice ballan wrasse on lug. the fishing was slow but the craic was mighty and we really enjoyed ourselves. so by 6pm we packed up and headed to fahan to meet up with fishermannum1.

we arrived to the beach to see don setting up in the distance and we all headed over and introductions were passed and we all got set up. jordan was at his work and had his doggie landed before me and dawsey even got a bait in the water   don got a few too and then i got in on the action quickly followed by dawsey. so we were all off the blocks and the blank was avoided :P :P . the conditions were perfect. no wind, no rain and the lough was like a pond    the only problem was that no one had told the rays about how good it was :| :| :| . there was'nt a sign of them anywhere :( but the doggies kept us busy enough and we love catching the wee fellas  me and dawsey even got a wee flattie each :D . i got a wee dab who's head was deformed and stumpy. at first i thought it might have been some sort of sole, but closer inspection of the lateral line and dorsal fin just showed him to be a bit of a deformed dab  . dawsy got a spotty flounder and the last fish of the night too which was another doggie. jordan would have caught more but he was the offical photographer of the trip  and he spent a good 2 hours watching the wee crabs and shrimp attacking our discarded mackie skeletons in the wee surf on the waters edge. those wee guys were having a royal rumble over free mackie buffet we laid on    . i was surprised how much life there was in the water at our feet  . a wee goby even tried to get in on the act too, but the crabs soon bullied him off the mack     . we called it a day at 1.30am as we had been on the go from 7.30am the day before and the thought of a 2 hour drive home was fast setting in :( but a stop off at a 24hr mc donalds soon had our energy levels replenished (cheers dawsey  ). we had a blast with some good fishing and great company. now all i gotta do is get my backside in gear and do all the packing for our 4 day camping and fishing trip to cruit island this weekend where we can do it all over again. jordan might even get his first thornie and turbot while we're there

no probs man. that waterline was hiveing with life    . it was only when i walked out ankle deep and stopped for a minute and looked down with my light that i saw hom much was moving around under the sand. the place was alive with wee crabs and shrimp. some of the bigger shrimps were almost 3 inches long. so we collected some to try at the dee today  not like us to let a bit of free bait pass us by

cheers dave. we had a blast   we're building up a good solid base of marks in the sat nav now     the only problem is finding the time to get out and fish them all   :D

thanks conor. i get a real buzz from fishing, but an even better buzz from watching the joy on junior's face when he's getting into the fish :P :P . our trips have given us memories that will last forever   . and in 30 or 40 year's time it will all be a bit of a reversal situation with jordan baiting and casting rigs for me and getting annoyed at me for casting clean over other anglers lines and sortin out tangles

nice one ivan :P dawsey can't get work covered, so he's gonna have to sit this trip out :( :( and i'm waiting to hear back from ronald. so it's looking like just me and shorty at the mo. i'll give you a call on friday before lunch man

we had a great trip don :D and junior is getting better at taking the pics  the only problem with the bells is that when you have them on 6 rods in the darkness it can be a bit confusing as to what rod is getting the hits    . but at one stage it did sound like we had a group of morris dancers in the backround all having simultanious seizures      i would have loved to have got a ray on that 13ft lidl beachcaster. did you see the bend that a 2lb doggie put in it        great craic as always, and we'll be back again soon enough  :D

Sounds like a good session lads. That's a great photo of the crabs eating the carcass. What's that under the red crab at the top? Is that part of the mack or is it some sort of creature? It looks like it has long pink tentacles.

Good fishing as usual - those crabs are hungry little feckers - but at least they were eating the remains of your mackerel and not your bait.

It looks as if you all had a really good time, well done.
You all don't half get about!!!
Norman and I must join you sometime on one of your road trips for the crack :)
The pictures are great too, looks like you's got a good day.
I hope you can spare Dawsey for a couple of nights next week, it's the good tides for the mullet again then and I really want him to get one.
You and Jordan should come down some night too
