Donaghadee Pier, Co Down, 14/08/09

#1 Post by vamper »

People:Me

Duration:2200 - 0015

Tide:dropping LW @ 0030

Weather:dry but windy

Bait:Mack

Rigs:3 hook flapper, 3 hook boom

Results:2 Pout, 1 Shore rockling, 1 Shanny

Report:
I took the chance of a few hours out on Friday night, and headed down to the Dee. it was drizzling on the drive down, but it had cleared by the time I arrived. Thankfully I had packed my headlight, because the streetlight at the end of the pier was out, meaning that the place was almost in total darkness
First up was a pout to get me off the mark, and 30 mins later I noticed a small knock on my second rod which I just put down to crabs. 2 minutes later and a bigger knock resulted in a double shot of a shore rockling and a shanny (another new species :D ) I can only assume that the first knock was the Shanny.
I tried to reel in shortly after this to check the bait on my other rod, when I got caught in what I assumed was weed. I started pumping the rig in, when I noticed that my 5 oz gripper was hovering in mid air,at head height and about 15 yards in the darkness in front of me. As I stared at this strange sight, the lead suddenly came free, and I almost ended up with a weight in the side of my head. I reckon that I got snagged on a piece of old line which had got caught on the grip wires, and suddenly gave way!
Another pout followed, and it all went quiet, so I packed up just after midnight, just as the tide was fully out.
The only thing to spoil the session was the noise and exhaust fumes of a petrol generator which was running at the side of the pier, with a lead running down to a large yacht which was moored between the pier and the lifeboat.
Still, I got a few fish, so went home happy

Cheers Eyes. The more I think about it, the more I realise how lucky I was. I saw the lead coming straight at me, and just got my arm up in time, or ir really would have done a bit of damage

well done on the new species man :D :D that's becoming a regular feature on your trips to the dee 8) 8) . are you sure the lead was hovering in mid air,,,,, sounds like you were getting a wee buzz from the generator fumes :? :? :? :? :?  . all joking aside. it's just as well you got fast reactions. i would'nt like to think of the damage that a gripper lead to to the face would cause
