What size hooks for bass and flatfish?

#1 Post by ian 123 »

Hi lads, I am planning to fish an area which holds bass and flatfish but Im unsure what size hooks to use? Should I set up two different rigs for each species or is there a certain size hook that will catch both species? thanks for the help

Depends on what bait you are using.

A size 1 hook will do if you are using worms. I'd probably even drop down to a size 2 or 4 for the flatties.

Don't forget - A small hook will catch a big fish but a large hook won't catch a small fish!
Species List 2012 (Me) - Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Plaice, Codling, pollack, dab, SS Scorpion Fish, Ballan Wrasse, Codling.

Species List 2012 (Daniel) - Not got started yet :-(

As bass and flatties are often found at the same range and will take similar baits i find a good quality size 2 hook will cover most situations.I have started using owner cutting point hooks recently and though they are dear i know they wont let me down .

I personally never use anything smaller than a 3/0 and ive had pin whiting and tiny dabs on them, one thing to remember and this is just my personal opinion with small hooks, a bigger fish can easily swallow it making catch and release a bit more difficult, also fish with bigger & harder mouths such as bass can be missed a bit more easily with small hooks.

its mainly bass fishing i do with the odd flounder thrown in and all i use is size 2 hooks. ive had a Bass to over 8lbs and the hook held up fine. dont go for the cheap option tho. if i was targeting the flats tho id go down to a size 4 but these can be a bit more akward than the 2's for unhooking.

I had a pin whiting about 10cm on a 3/0 in Wexford two weeks ago

It was also perfectly lip hooked

i use between a 1 and a 6 for flats, the work perfectly, havnt yet fished for bass, i would say u would probably get them on the same sizes as u would use for flats.
