really nice town in Co Sligo
People Just me:
Duration 1145am - 1600:
Tide high to receeding:
Weather Warm overcast no rain :
Bait Sandeel, mackerel strip:
Rigs Flattie rig, Float mixed feathers :
Results 4 dabs, 1 plaice, 3 macks, 1 Crab, Codling & small wrasse :
Report
Arrived and hoped to fish the strand into high water, but too many tourists about, so headed for the breakwater, was told by a local boat owner that a shoal of fish poss macks just off breakwater, so set up feathers and had a dozen or so casts which netted v small macks, thought this to be similar to child abuse so untied feathers.
Set up a flattie rig with a sandeel bait and a plain size 4 hook paternoster with sandeel, first cast dont think they lead had settled when fist fish attached a nice plaice, this was followed by loads of missed bites/strikes, then landed 4 dabs and a nice crab which we ate for tea. then switched to float and then had codling and wrasse.
Had an excellent afternoon only spoilt by hoards of kids wanting to know what ye doing!!:

amazing the different colours of your flounders, did you get them from different areas or distances? I ask because they change the colour according to their habitat. Nice report btw

Re: really nice town in Co Sligo
Nice one, Flounders from the open beach are very nice to eat
We'd a comp there a couple of years ago with SAI on the beach, lots of small flats but some good seatrout caught & released (Funny to see lads celebrating catching baby flats & cursing catching non counting seatrout).
Lovely little town too!

Re: really nice town in Co Sligo
Thanks all for your kind comments
Had me doubts about the darker one's as I was told by a "local" they were dabs, I not sea fished properly for a long time time so took his word, however the lighter one is def a small plaice IMHOpin, colouration being the main identifier I thought as it was lighter with tell tail red spots on it, but I have to bow to experience.
Thanks Zeke
Thanks Salty & barry
FWIW ??

Re: really nice town in Co Sligo
they are all flounder, light colouration and orange spots are nothing to go by when differentitiating between plaice and flounder. what your looking for is, small nodules on the crown of the plaice's head, a smooth lateral line and a light pearly tinge to the underside. a flounder, with often have a varied colours, including orange spots, ridge of small bumps on the lateral line and a matt white colour to the underside.

i believe they are quite nice to eat
look for a deepish rock mark, clearing to sand, fish the fringes of the rough/broken ground with rag tipped with a thin sliver of mack, twichting your bait can see a big increase in catches. plaice feed by sight rather than scent, so a calmish overcast day with clear water is almost essential. sandeel is also quite good for the bigger fish.

Re: really nice town in Co Sligo
Nice catch there Wozza glad to see that the mark produced for ya.
Those wee codling are almost a pest there at the minute.I hope their big bro's turn up in winter.I got a small plaice there last saturday night so keep trying they are there. Did you try for the conger after? The onlookers can be a pain on that mark alright I get sick of answering the same questions over and over. If you fancy a long walk the best mark on the beach is right up the other end near where the river comes out. It a b@s#@*d of a walk and the sand gets softer as you go along.
