New PB Bass!

#1 Post by wilky83 »

People: me
Tide: falling
Weather: cloudy but warm, some sun.
Method: lures ( chug bug, kiltys, maria chase bw etc)
Results: 1 bass landed.

Report:

I have fished this one spot for over a year now for bass, i only started fishing last may and this is where i caught my first sea fish a bass of 4lbs 3 ozs, since then i have seen people fishing with me take bass of 9 lbs 4 ozs and 9 lbs 8 ozs, all the time being happy for them but always thinking i wish i could land a big bass, near specimen size i know i have been lucky to catch the ones i have caught, the biggest being the first i ever caught i always wanted bigger i suppose we all do :D .
So to todays outing i got home around 9 o'clock this morning, i looked out at the weather looked like rain but i decide i would go anyway as i wanted to try out my new lure a storm chug bug, i have a tried poppers before but not with braid with the feel of the braid it made it so much easier this time, i had a few casts with the kiltys first but no luck, didint see any fish moving at all, so i decide i would cast out the chug bug and give it a whirl, the brais makes everything come alive its amazing :D :D , so second cast the bug was about 30 meters out i was chugging it back by jerking the rod tip and also my reeling down to the bug and then reeling fast two or three times, i was thinking to myself about reading the book Hooked on Bass, they talked about different types of retrive, suddenly i saw the bug flying through the air and a huge splash as a large bass through caution to the wind to get a meal, amazingly i didnt panic   , and just twitched the bug and again the bass came back and smashed it in a huge flurry of white water, but still not hooked i thought oh well i missed it and started to reel again when suddenly a huge third smash saw the beast hooked on the middle treble, five minutes of heart stopping rod bending action my prize lay at my feet im not sure who was more exhausted me or the fish :D :D , it took awhile to remove the treble but he was freed asap, a quick photo weighing and measurement put him/her  , at 8 lbs 4 oz and 71 cms, i couldnt not believe it not specimen but boy was i happy. It took him a while to regain some composure but he eventually swam away strongly, what a sight to catch, and to see swim away :P :P :P .

Just a quick point on the CHUG BUG amazing the sight of a bass smashing the lure from beneath was probably the best moment iv had in fishing, words cannot do justice to the feeling :D .
Can any recommend good treble hooks? And should i flatten the barbs?

Well done, delighted for you!

Was starting to have my doubts about the Chug-bug, but now I'm not so sure... :? !

That's a good point, as I replaced trebles in most (but not all) of my bass lures. Usually I was using Gamakatsu 13B (size 6) but this year tried Owner #6 and they working well too. Because I'm sure that there is plenty of owners and gamakatsus #6 here are two things I'm always paying attention to. 1) Make sure that they are thick enough, as I found that bass have amazing ability to bend and unfold trebles in an effort to free themselves. 2) Make sure that they going to be properly resistive to saltwater. Good example is item number 38-446-527-06 from Bass Pro.

Tight lines!

Well done Kevin,
thats a cracker fair play to you.I take it you fished your old haunt and with good reason :D :D .Surface fishing with lures is unreal when you get a take, you did it by the text book [don't stop reeling when a fish misses the first take, just stop for a second and continue again].
The owner trebles are the business allright, but bare in mind you will lose a few inevitably if you flatten the trebles especially on the poppers, but it does make it easier to remove the hooks on any fish you land.A good long nose pliers will also help in hooking the fish,i've been out once since talking to last[you know why  ],managed a few to 5lbs and interestingly all engulfed the lures but fought very gently  .Keep up the good work and with a bit of luck an even bigger one could be waiting for you.
Well done :D :D
